Track Packages Quick Redirect - How to remove

By Urte

Track Packages Quick (aka trackpackagesquicktab.com) is a package-tracking browser extension. Turns out that it is more of a browser hijacker and a search-redirecting newtab virus. Reputable antivirus programs consider Track Packages Quick to be an unwanted program. It can even be called a Yahoo redirect virus because it does indeed redirect your search queries to Yahoo.

Browser extension

Track Packages Quick is a browser extension that works on Chrome, Firefox, and Internet Explorer. On Safari, TrackPackagesQuicktab.com only offers notifications. It’s released by a company known as Eightpoint Technologies, which has been making browser hijackers for years. Besides Track Packages Quick, it’s made Email Helper App, Search Hub, My Obituaries App, and dozens of others.

People don’t like these extensions. Most of the time, Eightpoint’s extensions don’t have informative reviews on online stores. However, when they do, it’s various complaints from users:

  • Reviews asking how this extension got installed and how to remove it.
  • Angry comments about the extension hijacking search results and ruining the new tab page.
  • Warnings to avoid the extension and claims about it being malware.
  • Complaints about pop-up ads, redirects, new tabs, and other symptoms likely caused not by a browser extension, but some more serious adware.

Adware

In Internet Explorer, Track Packages Quick sets a new search engine at search.trackpackagesquicktab.com. In other browsers, it doesn’t need to – it can just redirect your search queries (after reading them). This is bad for users because they’re forced to use a search engine they might not like made worse by all the ads injected in the results. It’s worse when you realize the implications for privacy.

Unlike some other companies, Eightpoint has a privacy policy that is honest and easy to understand. It reveals just how much data Track Packages Quick can collect about you – your ISP, IP, location, exactly what you search for when you use Track Packages Quick and in the results page, which ads you click on, what icons you click on on Track Packages Quick’s new tab page, all the extensions you have installed, your browser, language, and device information. This information can be used to help advertisers and publishers offer you relevant ads.

It’s not just Track Packages Quick that’s bad for your online privacy. More often than not, browser extensions get permissions they don’t need and track you in hopes of monetizing you somehow. Free content is only free because of advertising, after all. But I’m just not sure that Track Packages Quick is worth paying for.

Browser hijacker

On Chrome, Track Packages Quick claims the permissions read and change all your data on trackpackagesquicktab.com, replace your new tab page, read your browsing history, and manage your extensions. All of these are certainly not necessary to allow you to track your packages (which is supposed to be the extension’s main function).

And sure, Eightpoint reveals honestly that Track Packages Quick is supported by sponsored web search. This is new, they didn’t use to be so honest. Maybe it has to do with Chrome purging their store of Eightpoint’s products recently because of dishonest installation, among other problems.

Despite the newfound honesty, Track Packages Quick is still a browser hijacker:

  • It replaces the new tab page.
  • It changes your search settings or promotes an affiliated search engine.
  • It reads your browsing history and what other extensions you’ve installed.

There’s just no need to do these things for a package tracking application. I mean, your browsing history? Why does Track Packages Quick need that? Or your new tab when package tracking could fit in an extension pop-up. Either Track Packages Quick is a hijacker or the people who made it are incompetent – and they’re not, we’ve seen some decent products from Eightpoints before.

Track Packages Quick is not a good product, however: it prevents you from keeping control over your new tab page and doesn’t offer customization features, it almost forces you to use whatever search engine is affiliated with it, and some users don’t even install it voluntarily.

How to remove Track Packages Quick

How Track Packages Quick gets installed

Usually, search-redirecting hijackers like Track Packages Quick get installed with some random freeware. They’re included as additional offers: new web search, new tabs, useful utilities. They’re never as good as promised. Worse, information that Track Packages Quick will be installed might be hidden in custom or advanced settings page that you might skip during installation. This means that you can install Track Packages Quick without explicitly agreeing to it!

Another way that Track Packages Quick gets downloaded is when people try to look up their parcel and stumble on TrackPackagesQuick.com – a site that pretends that it can track packages. Type whatever in the search field and you’ll be recommended to install Track Packages Quick if you want to see the result – and, in the end, it doesn’t even show you the result! It’s just dishonest and totally unhelpful.

To stop Track Packages Quick from redirecting your search and your new tab anymore, you need to remove it. For most users, there are better ways to track packages anyway: bookmarks, for example, work well, as do links saved on the default new tab. It’s not that different from what Track Packages Quick does, which is redirect your package tracking queries to some unrelated websites.

How to get rid of it

You can remove Track Packages Quick from your browser manually, the instructions for how are in the following section. But you might not want to leave it at that. If you’re experiencing any adware symptoms (pop-up ads, redirects, a slower computer), scan your device with an anti-malware scanner like SpyHunter for Windows, Combo Cleaner for MacOS, or another trusted tool. Most of them, even if they’re paid, at least offer a free scan. If Track Packages Quick was installed together with some adware, that adware should also be removed. And be careful with whatever website you downloaded it from – clearly, they don’t take your security seriously.
