Turbo PDF Hijacker - How to remove

By Urte

Turbo PDF is a browser add-on that’s more interested in your search traffic than in helping you convert PDFs. It’s not dangerous, but it’s very unhelpful and potentially bad for your privacy. In a nutshell, Turbo PDF takes too much control over your browser, much like a browser hijacker.

What is Turbo PDF?

Browser extension

Turbo PDF is a browser extension. It’s supposed to help people convert files from Doc to Pdf. It also “updates” your new tab page to Info-search.page.

Turbo PDF is a very unnecessary add-on that looks a lot like a hijacker (a browser extension that makes unwanted changes to your browser). If it were just a simple file converter, it could have easily been created to be unobtrusive; it could have worked from the extension pop-up in the upper corner of your browser window. Instead, it replaces your home page/new tab page.

The new tab page is immensely important – it is basically our gateway to the wider internet. Many of us have links to our favorite pages on our new tab, which helps us browse more efficiently. Turbo PDF replaces that page with its own, replacing the personalized favorite links with its own selection.

And Turbo PDF’s presentation is so lacking in personality that some users – people who are inexperienced with browser extensions – might not realize the reason why their browser suddenly changed.

The changes that Turbo PDF makes are largely not good for the user. They’re only good for the operators of the extension, the people who want to promote Info-search.page.

Turbo PDF replaces your new tab page.

Turbo PDF is a file converter app. It converts, for instance, Doc files to PDFs.

The popularity of these apps has always baffled me. After all, converting a document to a PDF is as easy as opening it and printing it to file. Even if you don’t have a program that could read a document, you probably have an Outlook or Google account and can simply open the document online. Other file conversions are also relatively painless.

How unwanted extensions get installed

It often happens that people whose browsers get hijacked by an extension can’t explain how it happened. Sometimes victims have no idea how a dangerous add-on for installed. Sometimes they say that they had to install the extension in order to use another website. In such cases, deceptive advertisement is the most likely explanation.

If you also didn’t mean to install Turbo PDF, it might be good to figure out how it ended up on your device.

Turbo PDF and other file converters are still advertised as helping you convert files. They’re promoted online, somewhat vaguely. I’ve seen the design that Turbo PDF uses before – that big green “Continue” button. It is employed by other browser hijackers, often those using very misleading ads to get people to visit their sites – such as search engine ads promising to let you download a completely unrelated program.

The ad itself might look alright, but its context, the whole installation flow, reveals the ways in which it deceives people. This problem is known to Chrome’s developers (Taking Action on Deceptive Installation Tactics).

Another common way that browser extensions spread is by being embedded in the installers of other programs. If you don’t use Advanced/Custom installation settings, you might even miss these embedded offers and end up installing them unknowingly.

How to remove Turbo PDF

Uninstall Turbo PDF manually. It’s simple to do, the instructions can be found at the bottom.

In case Turbo-pdf.com is showing you unwanted ad notifications, you can block them in your browser settings.

In addition, it might be helpful to scan your computer with antivirus programs, such as Spyhunter for Windows or Combo Cleaner for macOS. If Turbo PDF was installed with other adware apps, then these scanners will warn you.
