Snappy Tab Hijacker - How to remove

By Urte

Snappy Tab is a potentially unwanted browser extension that replaces the new tab page. It lacks features that other new tab extensions and default new tab pages have. It also tracks users and pushes them to use its search links.

Snappy Tab is not outright harmful, but it’s risky. If you use its search, then you lose control over your results. In addition, your privacy might be harmed by Snappy Tab’s tracking. It’s recommended to remove this extension.

What is Snappy Tab?

Snappy Tab replaces the new tab

Snappy Tab is a browser add-on: a little program that gets attached to a browser and changes it adds features.

Extensions can do awesome things like change the color and layout of pages, check your spelling, compare prices of products across different websites, and let you play games. But Snappy Tab is a lot more modest.

Here is what Snappy Tab can do:

  • It replaces your new tab page with its own.
  • It tracks individual users.

The new tab of this extension looks like Snappytab.com. It has a search box in the middle (the search box connects to Bing.com) and a few links to popular sites (Gmail, Facebook, YouTube, and Amazon) below that. It also shows time and date in one corner.

In its description on the Chrome Web Store, Snappy Tab promises a “clean tab look”. In my opinion, this is just a polite way to say that Snappy Tab lacks customization. You can’t add or remove links, there’s no way to change the destination of the search box. Indeed, Snappy Tab is worse than the default new tab provided by Chrome.

Not to mention, Snappy Tab can track its users individually and it can control their searches. If you type text into Snappy Tab’s search box, it goes to Snappytab.com. The site then forwards the query to a search engine – or to any site it wants.

Snappy Tab's new tab is very minimal.

How browser hijackers get installed

But if Snappy Tab is so bad, why have more than 5 thousand users have installed this extension?

And this applies to many other extensions, too. Snappy Tab is similar to Easy Eyes, AD&POP BlockCookie Muncher. These are just a few of many add-ons that share similarities with Snappy Tab: absolute minimum functionality, tracks users, hijacks their search. And they have some interesting ways of spreading, usually as pop-up ads.

Snappy Tab is advertised online. It checks which site you were on before you installed the extension. These ads are usually simple new tab pop-ups that encourage you to install the extension. In my experience, new tab pop-up ads appear on the sorts of sites that show aggressive, obnoxious, sometimes dangerous ads: pirating sites, mostly.

Some free programs are bundled with ads – optional offers for programs that you can allow to be installed alongside the one that you are installing. The problem is, some bundlers make it really hard to see and refuse those optional offers. And then you end up with unwanted add-ons and apps on your computer and no idea where they came from.

Similarly, some browser extensions advertise others during their installation.

So, if you found Snappy Tab installed but don’t know how it got on your browser, those are a few of the possible explanations.

How to get rid of Snappy Tab

Getting rid of the Snappy Tab new tab should be as simple as removing the Snappy Tab extension from your list of installed extensions. Detailed instructions for how to do it can be found at the bottom. You’ll also find instructions on how to change your new tab settings. You can control which page your browser opens in your new tab.

It’s possible that Snappy Tab is not the only potentially unwanted app, program, or browser add-on that was installed on your device. I’ve noticed that adware infections often spread in little groups or that they promote one another with pop-ups. In addition, adware bundlers might install unknown programs without you even noticing.

Check your other programs, see if you find anything suspicious. You can scan your device with anti-malware apps (Spyhunter for PC, Spyhunter for Mac, others) to check your programs automatically.
