100sofRecipes (fill name – The Best Recipes by 100sofRecipes) is a browser add-on that’s not very well-liked by antivirus programs (VirusTotal link). That’s because 100sofRecipes is a browser hijacker, a browser add-on whose main goal is to control how the user can search the internet. Any recipe-related functionality is secondary.

How 100sofRecipes gets installed
100sofRecipes can be installed from 100sofrecipes.com, its main site. This site is advertised on various alternative search engines, like Izito, Info.com, and Zapmeta. I call them “alternative”, but really, they’re just adware sites that take other sites’ search results (often Google’s, but not necessarily) and slap a bunch of ads on top.
If your internet search results regularly show ads for other search result sites, that could be a symptom of a malicious browser extension messing with your searches.
The ads shown by these sites often promote various browser hijackers. Recipe-related queries may promote 100sofRecipes, DailyRecipeGuide, RecipeSearch, RecipeKart, etc. As the ads appear on tops of the results, and they don’t exactly make it clear that they’re going to install a browser extension. 100sofRecipes.com shows a “Continue” button prominently – it’s not clear what it does. So, no wonder that so many people install it (50,000 on the Chrome Web Store). They were just trying to find some recipes.
Another possibility is that 100sofRecipes was bundled with another browser extension or a free program. Bundling is often done to trick people into unintentionally installing some junkware and adware.
What 100sofRecipes does
The Best Recipes by 100sofRecipes is not much help when it comes to finding recipes. Sure, after hijacking your new tab page, it offers a few links to various recipe sites, but people can do that themselves by using favorites and bookmarks.
100sofRecipes can:
- read your browsing history (plus your demographic data, your IP address, and which links you click on),
- show notifications,
- replace the new tab page with Hp.myway.com,
- manage your apps and themes.
Replacing your browser’s new tab page (which is often the same as your home page) is very powerful. 100sofRecipes puts a link to Myway.com in the middle of that new tab page. This is a site owned by 100sofRecipes’ creators (100sofRecipes is made by Ask Applications/Mindspark). Myway.com makes more money the more users it has, so 100sofRecipes was released to trick people to go to Myway.com.
You may have also got Search App by Ask browser extension, a browser extension that can read and change all data on all websites and that promotes Ask.com, a site owned by a company related to Mindspark.
Overall, 100sofRecipes takes away a lot of user choice when it comes to browser customization – all so that it can promote Myway.com.
