Ad Video Blocker is a browser add-on that blocks YouTube ads. While it does that, Ad Video Blocker is also ad-supported. As a result, it can open unexpected pages and redirect to potentially unwanted sites. While Ad Video Blocker is not harmful, it’s not the best ad blocker to use.

How Ad Video Blocker works
Ad Video Blocker blocks ads and hijacks searches
Ad Video Blocker is advertised as an ad blocker for Youtube. “Youtube without Ads” is its title. And indeed, it does block ads on the video site. However, it also shows advertisements.
There are many ad blockers on the Chrome Web Store. It’s easy to make one. There is freely available code, filters, and blocklists that anyone can use. These ad blockers might not be as good as the best blockers out there. They usually lack customization and any control options. But they do function.
As it’s so easy for anyone to make your own ad blocker, it’s not surprising that some developers wanted to make a little bit of money by repackaging a functioning ad blocker with a monetization tool (or with ad fraud, in some cases). After all, companies have been making newtab hijackers and search hijackers for years – useless extensions that make money by hijacking users’ searches.
In Ad Video Blocker’s case, its privacy policy says that the extension uses third-party search engines for this. It seems like Ad Video Blocker redirects searches to unexpected sites. This behavior leads to Ad Video Blocker being classified as a potentially unwanted program or a browser hijacker.
Other problems with Ad Video Blocker
This extension has its own website – Advideoblock.com. There, users can install Ad Video Blocker on their browser.
Ad Video Blocker appears to have tens of thousands of users on the Chrome Web Store. If this number is real, then the extension is quite popular.
But I have my doubts. The reviews for Ad Video Blocker look very fake.
- They’re similarly short, don’t discuss the ad blocker’s features, just say “excellent” or “cool”.
- Those reviews that do comment on features get them wrong, calling Ad Video Blocker a “dictionary” or a productivity extension.
I wonder if the creators of Ad Video Blocker got a shady marketing company to take care of the image of their extension.
There are similarities between Ad Video Blocker and a few other extensions: SpeedNet, AdBlocker Max, Quick Speedtest, as well as Music Search for Chrome™ and Movies Search for Chrome™.
How to remove Ad Video Blocker
Ad blockers are great, but it’s important to use reputable ones. And whichever ad blocker you pick, always make sure that you’re installing the official one, as scammers sometimes upload infected clones. The best way to do this is to go on the extension developer’s website to get the link to the extension.
You can uninstall the Ad Video Blocker add-on manually as described in the instructions below. Then, review your browser settings and make sure that your search engine and new tab settings are just how you want them.
That said, Ad Video Blocker doesn’t need to take over the search engine settings to manipulate searches. If you still experience redirects and ads after removing Ad Video Blocker, check your browser for other potentially unwanted extensions.
You can use anti-malware apps (Spyhunter for Mac, Combo Cleaner for Mac, Spyhunter for PC, others) to find and remove other adware and malware.
