Hyper-app.xyz adware
Injects ads into search results
Hyper Search, whose home page is Hyper-app.xyz, is an adware infection in the form of a browser extension. It’s not very visible – the browser looks normal when Hyper Search is installed and nothing looks to be changed before and after the installation.
But occasionally, the browser randomly opens a Bing tab to display your search results. Even when Bing is not your default search engine. These search results display ads injected by Hyper-app.xyz.
Hyper-app.xyz doesn’t always inject an ad. Sometimes it injects a spot for an advertisement and leaves it empty. Often, Hyper Search doesn’t redirect your search to Bing. So, overall, Hyper-app.xyz’s effect is very mild and not noticeable.
Of course, Hyper-app.xyz could always be updated to be more aggressive. Not that ad-injecting adware isn’t already dangerous.
The problems with ad injections are a few:
- More ads make a webpage harder to use.
- Injected ads hurt the publisher (in this case Bing), erode trust, and steal money from it.
- Hyper-app.xyz can display whatever it wants in the ads, including malicious links that lead to malware and scams. Because the ads that Hyper-app.xyz shows don’t need to pass any sort of review by Bing, they don’t need to obey any standards.
Logs search queries
Hyper Search doesn’t hide the fact that it injects advertisements – it promises to add shopping offers to Bing.com search results in its description on its Chrome Web Store page.
It appears to do more than that, though. Hyper Search (the browser extension) appears to read the search queries from the Bing, Yahoo, and Google search engines and send them to Hyper-app.xyz (the associated website) only to send the query to the original search engine afterward. It redirects immediately, so, unlike with S3redirect.com and Games-search.net, Hyper-app.xyz’s address is not noticeable in the search bar of the browser, not even for a moment.
Hyper-app.xyz reading users’ search queries is either some sort of advertising fraud (where Hyper-app.xyz is rewarded with ad revenue in exchange for bringing traffic to the search site that you would have gone to anyway) or a method of logging your search queries for advertisers to use. Or both.
Looking at Hyper-app.xyz’s privacy policy, it constantly underlines that it does not store its users’ personal information. It does collect data, though:
- Your browser version, data about your other software, data about your hardware.
- Your IP, location and language.
- Which site you were on before getting to Hyper-app.xyz.
Hyper-app.xyz doesn’t mention collecting your search logs (though this kind of depends on your interpretation of the privacy policy) but it does have access to your browser tabs and it needs to know what you search for in order to serve you relevant ads. And search history can, in theory, be used to uncover the identity of its owner – not something that a shady site like Hyper-app.xyz should be trusted with.
How to remove Hyper-app.xyz ads
You can stop Hyper-app.xyz from interfering with your search es and from collecting data by uninstalling Hyper Search. You can do it in browser settings as described in the following chapter of this post.
It’s advisable to check your other extensions, too. Hyper Search might not be the only infection. Shop Search is very similar to it, and so is Prosearch, FastUrl, and others. They might have come bundled with an installer for some free program, downloaded by malware, or advertised by a shady site or adware. Thus, it’s a good idea to check your other programs and apps.
You can use an antivirus program for this, such as Spyhunter for Windows, Combo Cleaner for macOS, or another program that you trust.
