How Anygamesearch.com affects the browser
You may have noticed your searches being redirected to Yahoo through Feed.anygamesearch.com. This happens if you have the AnyGameSearch extension installed on your browser.
Usually, browser extensions are supposed to add features and improve the functionality of your web browser (block ads, help you download videos, add night mode to websites). Not AnyGameSearch, though – all it does is hijack your default search engine and also spy on you. Nothing to do with games, by the way. It’s just a meaningless name.
Anygamesearch.com logs data as it watches you browse the internet:
- It logs your search terms.
- It reads browsing history, such as what ads you clicked on.
- It sees technical information, such as your internet service provider, language, etc.
The reason that Anygamesearch.com hijacks your searches is likely because it makes money from referring you to another search site. In addition, it may do something with the browsing data that it has access to (for example, sell it).
It’s possible that Anygamesearch.com also got access to your notifications and is now showing notification pop-ups on your screen.
How AnyGameSearch gets installed
So, how does such a useless browser extension get installed by anyone? Not intentionally, that’s for sure.
There is a type of misleading advertisement that is made to confuse people into believing that they have to install something to proceed. Let’s say you were trying to watch a movie online or download a file hosted on a file download site. You press whatever action button you need to, and a new page opens. It says something like “Download Ready”, “Ready: Install”, or simply “Continue”. It looks as if the site that you were just on is telling you to download something. Maybe it requires a browser extension to work?
No, it doesn’t – these pop-ups are nothing more than ads, same as the ads for gambling sites, get-rich-quick schemes, and MacKeeper pop-ups. They’re just made to look like real warnings, which confuses people and leads them to download harmful extensions.
The sites that show such ads don’t usually mind. They get money from these ads, after all.
Looking at the victims of Anygamesearch.com, PDF Converter HD Search, Pdfconverter-search.com, and others, they often say that they don’t know how the extension was installed or that they were told that it was required by a site.
It’s possible that another extension, a trojan, or a bundler installed AnyGameSearch for you. If this happened, then you should check what apps you have installed (especially recently) with an antivirus scanner if needed.
