Issues caused by ArtemisSearch

ArtemisSearch is a malicious adware app that gets downloaded from the internet with free programs (adware bundlers), fake system updates, etc. This adware tricks people into installing it, so victims are very surprised when they find it on their Mac.

ArtemisSearch is quite an annoying piece of adware:

  • it shows pop-up ads,
  • it hijacks browser settings to change your search engine and home page,
  • it can read all of your webpages, which could include your passwords,
  • ArtemisSearch may change your network settings to reroute traffic through a shady server, which causes issues with your internet connection,
  • ArtemisSearch may generate fake pop-ups to hide real warnings and trick you to click on buttons without knowing what they’ll do.

When it comes to macOS malware, ArtemisSearch is pretty serious. It’s best to remove it as quickly as you notice it. If only it were that easy, though. Drag ArtemisSearch to Trash once, and it comes back the next time you start your Mac. To really get rid of it is a bit more work.

ArtemisSearch uses an icon that looks like a magnifying glass on a green circle.

How to remove ArtemisSearch

ArtemisSearch adware can be temporarily stopped by starting your Mac in safe mode. Just hold Shift while your Mac is booting. In this mode, a Mac does not start some apps, including ArtemisSearch. This way, ArtemisSearch can’t interfere with you trying to remove it.

The quickest way to get rid of malware is to scan your computer with an anti-malware app, such as Combo Cleaner. You should use a good-quality, reputable program that you trust and that you’re comfortable with. But it’s also possible to remove ArtemisSearch manually.

In macOS, profiles are settings that let someone, such as an administrator from your job or school, manage settings on your Mac. But profiles are also abused by malware. For example, ArtemisSearch uses profiles to hijacks your browser settings. You can find and delete these malicious profiles by opening System Preferences and then Profiles. Then select each item that belongs to ArtemisSearch and click the minus button at the bottom.

Open Finder, select the Applications folder, find ArtemisSearch, and drag it to Trash.

Open your web browsers and look for ArtemisSearch in the extensions page. I put the instructions for removing extensions at the bottom.

A thing to note is that ArtemisSearch may change its name over the time it’s on your Mac. So, its files may be named something different, such as DynamicExtra, BasicVirtual, TotalLetterSearch, DisplayUpdate, GeneralLaunch, UltraSearchApp, etc.

If ArtemisSearch refuses to go away, you may need to get rid of the files that were put by ArtemisSearch in your system folders. Look in these folders:

  • ~/Library/Application Support
  • ~/Library/LaunchAgents
  • ~/Library/LaunchDaemons

You can open hidden folders by using to Go to Folder dialog (open it by right-clicking Finder in the Dock). But only delete files that you’re certain belong to ArtemisSearch, otherwise, you might accidentally reset settings on other, legitimate apps.
