It allows you to record audio online without having to download a recorder app. That’s what it should do, in theory.

In reality, Audio Voice Recorder Pro also changes your browser’s default search engine to Search.chromeapps.site and replaces the home page. These things are not needed for Audio Voice Recorder Pro to work. But they do help it hijack browsers and spy on people.

At the time of writing, Search.chromeapps.site redirects to Nearbyme.io. This site uses Google search to deliver search results, but it lacks all the features for customizing those results (SafeSearch, GUI for filtering) that you get on other search engines. It also doesn’t show rich results.

At the same time, Audio Voice Recorder Pro’s promoted search site shows more advertisements than other search engines. On top of that, Nearbyme.io collects data on its users, such as their location and the links they click on.

There is no good reason for Audio Voice Recorder Pro to replace the browser’s search engine. Other than to monetize them, that is.

Chromeapps.site/audio is full of pop-up ads

Another way that Audio Voice Recorder Pro makes money to its creators is with pop-up ads in the audio recorder app.

To record audio, Audio Voice Recorder Pro opens Chromeapps.site/audio. This is a website, or perhaps a web app. Either way, it needs no extension to work. The site address is enough.

It’s best to stay away, though. Chromeapps.site/audio is full of pop-up ads. If you don’t have an ad blocker, using this site is very frustrating. Every other click opens an ad for a betting site, a payday loan site, and similar controversial content.

The worst of the ads shown by Audio Voice Recorder Pro was the fake Mac virus alert very similar to the Masstrk.com scam. This scam, if successful, causes the victim to lose $129.99 to a fake app.
