Learn more about Babylon rogue extension
The add-on has been around ever since 1998, and in 2012, we announced about its existence in this article. While this infection is of long standing, it has endured all criticism from security researchers and continues with its second decade of existence.
Our goal is to also check the popularity of this application, and we were astonished to discover that Babylon.com is ranked in the position of 14,637. Considering that this rating is global, we presume that the Babylon Software Ltd, receives more than enough revenue from web traffic and from similar monetization strategies like online ads. There are several countries that get introduced to pop-ups from Babylon malware infection: United States, Mexico, Brazil, India and Chile.
Potentially unwanted programs (PUPs) are not entirely malicious, but they do compromise operating systems by initiating activities of phishing, redirection to fraudulent websites, browser hijacking and automatic installations of other PUPs. Babylon rogue extension is considered a comprehensible addition to users’ browsers. While it remodels browsers’ preferences, displays advertisements and monitors your online activities, it is not considered a virus. However, if you detect iSearch.babylon.com as your home page, we recommend yo to remove it.
If you you are recommended to install a Babylon unwanted program for your Mac or Windows operating system, remember that there are more conditions than you assume. Setup Wizards of these applications will have automatically-filled checkboxes, allowing these questionable products to “set my browser default search provider to Babylon”, “set Babylon search as my homepage”, “Download and install Babylon Toolbar”. This arrival of a suspicious toolbar and an unknown search platform might be immediately noticeable (since the appearance of infected browsers will significantly change). However, reverting these modifications is a different story.
Babylon is a set of language translation tools developed by Babylon LTD. They allow translating web content into other languages. These tools include Babylon toolbar virus which changes default search provider to Search.babylon.com. The installation might include other toolbars too. This software is quite annoying by default.
Why we have decided to list Babylon toolbar as Potentially Unwanted Application (PUP)
- Babylon toolbar hijacks user searches by default. The search provider is changed without any reason related to providing better results, just for monetary gain. That is one of the reasons people call this software Babylon redirect virus.
- This toolbar does not uninstall fully. By default, it DOES NOT store previous search provider settings and thus you will have to reset them manually. It is malicious on itself.
- Babylon software is distributed with unrelated software that provides coupon deals and similar. It might also be distributed by other questionable software in so called software bundles.
- We have seen cases when visitors claim having Babylon redirects without installing software themselves, thus we assume that it might be distributed by malware makers too in hopes to gain more money.
- Babylon is listed as PUP by several anti-malware vendors including Spyhunter and Spybot S&D.
While we do not list Babylon Toolbar as spyware, we still recommend uninstalling in the most cases. You should leave Babylon installed only if you have installed it by yourself. This is applied for almost all toolbars.

How to uninstall Babylon and stop the redirects
Babylon toolbar has uninstaller included in most of the cases. However, this might not be the case if it was installed by other toolbar or by some sort of fake Codec. Additionally, uninstaller does not restore default search provider, so you might be stuck with annoying search redirects.

Cor : Double checked myself. It detects Babylon, though maybe not all versions of it.
To remove it in firefox go to Tools – Addson – search for addon “TAB MIX”. Install the addon.
Open the addon and then go to “Event”. There in the drop down select “New Tab”. Your babylon will be listed there… Change it to whatever Tab you want. I prefer http://www.google.com

@Sangay Thinley
Sangay, I lost you. You said to got to install Tab Mix and I did. I went back to addons and found babylon and disabled. It’s still there!! You said to Open the addon..HOW? You said to go to event..WHERE?
I am not very computer literate but instructions have to cover EVERY aspect of what to do and how to do it. I’m lost and your suggestion didn’t help me. Can you give MUCH MORE COMPLEX instructions so I can get rid of Babylon?
I have tried everything I have found. Babylon still shows in two files after running Spybot S&D about ten times and going back thru to see if I can find and delete the blasted thing. It deleted everything except in my registry value and registry key. It is stuck in my IE Toolbar under
HKEY_local_machinesoftwareMicrosoftwindowscurrentVersionexplorerBrowser Helper Objects{2EECD738-5844-4a99-B4B6-146BF802613B}.
and
HKEY_local_machinesoftwareMicrosoftwindowscurrentVersionexplorerToolbar{988898411-442D-49dd-99D7-DC866BE87DBC}.
I am not real computer savvy but at my wits end – please help me. I did manage to get it out of google chrome (thank God).
By the way, warning to others, I obtained this virus from REIMAGE which is a computer repair system. It repaired alright and gave me a virus. When I told them, they just helped me to get it out of the visual toolbar area but now get rid of the virus. They actually got nasty with me, so word of warning to all… REIMAGE is not a good site to use.
Within Firefox, babylon also hides itself in user.js and prefs.js
You need to manually edit those 2 files and remove all traces of this parasite.
