Booster Search Redirect - How to remove

Booster Search is a search hijacker. It gets installed thanks to deceptive ads. Then, Booster Search changes your browser settings to make Feed.boostersearch.com your new default search engine. Boostersearch.com sends your search queries to Yahoo.com, which returns your internet search results even if you never used Yahoo before. Booster Search manifests in frustrating browser redirects and ad-filled search results. It’s just an adware infection and a search-hijacking browser add-on.

Search hijacker

Booster Search is a browser add-on, a small program that changes the functioning of your browser. Web browsers are how we interact with the internet, so malicious add-ons present a real danger. Luckily, Booster Search is only mildly malicious.

Booster Search is made by Webcoapps. Like other creations of Webcoapps, such as SearchZilla, Video Browse, Logic Search, Vista Search, etc., Booster Search is made to capture your search queries and refer them to Yahoo.com.

Once Booster Search is installed, it can do a few things:

  • change your search settings to Feed.boostersearch.com and lock that setting down,
  • read your search logs, the links you click on, the pages that you visit, and some technical information.

As for useful functions, Booster Search doesn’t really have any. It genuinely is just a browser hijacker that changes your search settings to Yahoo.com. Which is something you can do manually, without a browser add-on.

Booster Search uses the "Download ready: template to trick people.

How Booster Search gets installed

Some versions of Booster Search have over twenty thousand users – despite laying out in their descriptions that all that they do is change your search settings to Yahoo.com. What’s up with that?

Based on Booster Search and its siblings’ web analytics, it’s easy to see that they rely a lot on deceptive ads. For example, the “Download Ready” page shown in the illustration above. This is used by many browser hijackers as a sort of fake download button. It works in the right context.

Shown as a pop-up ad on sites where people look to download files. File, video, and audio converter sites may show that page as a pop-up ad. The user doesn’t read the fine print, doesn’t realize it’s an ad, and clicks the Download button, installing Booster Search without meaning to.

Free streaming sites do a similar thing, showing ads telling people to install a browser extension to be able to play the videos. Or telling people to install the extension to support the free sites with ads.

Bundling is another way that shady browser add-ons spread. Legitimate programs are bundled with unwanted software, turning them into trojans, almost.

How to remove Booster Search

The simplest and quickest way to remove unwanted browser add-ons is to right-click each of their icon and then choose the “Remove” option. Add-on icons are in the top right corner of your browser window, next to the address bar. If you can’t see them, try dragging the address bar’s right edge to the left.

It’s advisable to scan your whole computer with an antivirus scanner, such as Spyhunter for Windows, Combo Cleaner for macOS, or any other competent program. Scan results will show if there are any more malicious or potentially programs on your device that you may want to remove. Adware like Booster Search often get installed in groups and promote one another, so it wouldn’t be surprising to find a couple of other suspicious browser add-ons.

If Boostersearch.com or another site is sending you unwanted notifications, there’s a way to stop them. Open your browser and go into notification settings:

  • Chrome – type “chrome://settings/content/notifications” in the address box.
  • Safari – in the Safari menu, choose Preferences, Websites, Notifications.
  • New Edge – type “edge://settings/content/notifications” in the address box.
  • Firefox – open Settings, Preferences, Privacy & Security, scroll down to Permissions, and click on Settings next to Notifications.

There, find Boostersearch.com (it’s probably in a list with a few other sites) and press the button next to it, then choose the Block (or Deny) option. This will stop Boostersearch.com from sending notifications to your browser.
