Not associated with the NewsHub extension, Breaking News Hub is a browser add-on developed by Eightpoint Technologies, a company that releases a lot of very similar browser add-ons, many of which are considered to be browser hijackers and even found by antivirus programs to be suspicious.

The reasons for why Breaking News Hub is not recommended to use are a few:
- It behaves like a browser hijacker — redirects search queries to specific search engines and unnecessarily takes over the home page. This exerts control over your browser that isn’t needed for Breaking News Hub’s offered functions to work.
- It uses marketing which can end up with you installing it accidentally. Additionally, it bundles another extension with itself. Bundling is a very aggressive tactic that’s rarely used by legitimate and honest software products.
- Breaking News Hub uses advertising by shady ad-networks which are manipulative and predatory and which work with unethical advertisers.
Problems with Forms Hub App
While using Breaking News Hub isn’t necessarily dangerous, having it installed could show that your computer security is not in great condition and should be given a check-up. Potentially unwanted programs like Breaking News Hub and the bundlers that install it can put a computer at risk even without hurting it directly.
Regardless of whether it’s dangerous, I’m struggling to see why anyone would voluntarily use the Breaking News Hub new tab extension.
The extension might set the search.breakingnewshubtab.com as the new home page, where it puts an ad right in the middle. And it replaces the home page when it could have just had a pop-up window — now you can’t customize the home page to make it look the way you want to because Breaking News Hub overrides that.
The extension gives you a search bar in the middle of the screen, which I like, but there is seemingly no choice which website it leads to, so you’re always sent to Yahoo when you use it. A lot of search hijackers do this sort of thing — promote a single search engine. They also usually display more ads in the results than you would see if you were searching without Breaking News Hub. That’s why a lot of browser hijackers are also classified as adware — because their reason for existing seems to be to earn money from advertising.
If you’re someone who cares a lot about privacy, Breaking News Hub is also not a good choice — it gets access your browsing history and read all of your data on the websites where you type your search queries.
Not to mention that Breaking News Hub bundles Hide My Searches — a “privacy” extension that hijacks your browser much more thoroughly, can read your data on literally all websites, and makes it very inconvenient to try to use your favorite search engines.
How to avoid browser hijackers
Breaking News Hub and the other extensions, like MyQuickLotto and Forms Hub App, sometimes get installed on people’s computers without them noticing. There are a few reasons why this might happen.
One, they could have had a free program install some toolbars in the background. This can happen if you download free programs and don’t scrutinize every pixel of every setup window. Optional offers for new search settings (like search.breakingnewshubtab.com) and new applications are sometimes tucked away in custom settings and designed to be difficult to notice. If you see a giant bright button during the installation process, often it’s trying to get your attention away from something else on the screen, like a warning that you’d be installing something other than what you thought.
Another likely option is ads. The problem with hijackers like Breaking News Hub is that they’re often advertised using notification spammers like Message-alert.center. Those guys cause a lot of unwanted redirects, new tabs opening randomly, and pop-up ads that relentlessly attack your browser if you accidentally agree to a single prompt. Products that were rejected from normal advertising networks, like scams and malware, make use of these shady sites. It doesn’t reflect well on Breaking News Hub if it has to use such sites.
Basically, if you don’t remember installing Breaking News Hub yourself, it might be valuable to disable some notification permissions and purge your computer of any potentially unwanted programs. Programs like Spyhunter (PC) or Combo-Cleaner (Mac) can detect poor-reputation programs that aren’t necessarily malicious, so you can try and discover where and how you got the extension — and how to avoid unexpected browser modifications in the future.

Before installing browser extensions, always research them and consider if the deveoper is reputable, what the reviews have to say, and whether the permissions it asks for are reasonable. The browser is a very important program that we use to transfer a lot of private information, so permissions like “Read and change all your data on the websites you visit” should only be granted if you truly trust the developer.
