What is Breakingnewsnowtab?
It’s a browser extension. It changes your new tab page. In theory, that’s supposed to help you access breaking news, but that’s just an excuse. In reality, Breakingnewsnowtab is made to take over your browser’s default new tab page. This is the page that opens as the default page in your browser form which you’re supposed to navigate to search the internet. And now, Breakingnewsnowtab has control over that. It uses this access to direct you to affiliated sites (Yahoo.com), which allows Breakingnewsnowtab’s creators to indirectly make money from showing you a few ads each time.
Breakingnewsnowtab tries to give you the promised breaking news by posting buttons that open a few news-related sites. One of them is Thenewscorner.org, which has a lot more clickbait (get-rich-quick stuff, food supplements, etc.) than actual news. Another is Mynewswire.co, which is pretty much one big advertisement.
On top of that, Breakingnewsnowtab asks you to allow it to send you notifications, then uses them to spam you with advertisements for more browser hijackers.
And finally, Breakingnewsnowtab collects some data about you:
- your browsing history,
- the queries that you search for,
- your IP, ISP, and other technical data,
- your location,
- when and which search results and ads you click on.
Unsurprisingly, Breakingnewsnowtab is made by Eightpoint Technologies – the same company that made Breaking News Hub, Today Online News, Instant News Now, and a bunch of other browser hijackers.
How does Breakingnewsnowtab get installed?
You probably didn’t ask for Breakingnewsnowtab to take over your browser, and yet, it has found its way onto the computers of over forty thousand users. How did that happen?
Breakingnewsnowtab gets installed on the site Breakingnewsnow.net. Breakingnewsnow.net which just vaguely promises to give you quick access to Breaking News and then shows a big and bright CONTINUE button. This button leads to Breakingnewsnowtab’s installation, and not to any Breaking News streams.
And, like you’ve seen, all that Breakingnewsnowtab does is hijack your browser.
Based on web analytics, people find Breakingnewsnow.net by searching for popular news sources: Msnbc live, Fox live, and particular news shows. The same web analytics shows that Kensaq.com was commonly visited together with Breakingnewsnow.net. It’s very common for sites like Kensaq, Zapmeta, Informationvine, and others to advertise browser hijackers by putting ads for them right at the top of their search results.
But pretty much the only way for you to end up on Kensaq and similar sites is to already have malware on your computer that’s messing with your search results. It could be a browser extension that injects ads into your browser. You may search for something online and see your results reload after a second and reappear filled with ads. If that happens, it’s definitely the fault of malware.
The malware could be just about anything. For example, it is not uncommon for trusted and popular browser extensions to be bought by advertising companies and start spamming users with ads.
How to remove Breakingnewsnowtab
It should be pretty simple to get rid of Breakingnewsnowtab, as it’s just another browser add-on. Instructions with screenshots can be found in the next section. Don’t forget to examine all of your browser add-ons and find the ones that messed with your search and lead you to install Breakingnewsnowtab in the first place. Any extension that has permission to see and change all or some of the sites that you visit is suspicious.
Or you can have an anti-malware program, such as Combo Cleaner for macOS, Spyhunter for Windows, or another one scan your computer and see what they find. Breaking News Now should be detected as adware or a hijacker.
