What is Browser Checkup for Chrome by Doctor?
Browser Checkup for Chrome by Doctor, found on Getwebdoctor.com, is an extension for Chrome and Chromium browsers like Edge.
On the Chrome Web Store, it currently has 500k users, which it has gained rather quickly. The Getwebdoctor.com website is estimated by Similarweb to get around 300k visits each month.
Despite Browser Checkup for Chrome by Doctor’s popularity, there’s almost no discussion about this extension online. This is strange, suspicious even, and is in contrast to other browser security tools, such as Disconnect, which has around the same number of users as the “Doctor”, yet has plenty of reviews and discussion about it online.
Problems with Browser Checkup for Chrome by Doctor
It doesn’t justify its permissions
When Browser Checkup for Chrome by Doctor is being installed, it asks for these permissions:
- Read and change all your data on the websites that you visit
- Display notifications
- Manage your apps, extensions, and themes
Unfortunately, Browser Checkup for Chrome by Doctor doesn’t explain why it needs these permissions. And I can’t see why it needs to access all URLs. According to its own description, the “Doctor” scans for known bad extensions, nothing more. Asking to read your data on all sites seems excessive.
Once I installed Browser Checkup for Chrome by Doctor, I also added a few unsafe extensions that I knew of and that hadn’t been removed yet from the Chrome Web Store: mostly just a few search hijackers. Unfortunately, none of them were detected.
I scanned them with Browser Checkup for Chrome by Doctor, restarted the browser and scanned again. But the “Doctor” always declared the extension to be safe. While I’m sure that Browser Checkup for Chrome by Doctor detects malicious extensions, it’s not as aggressive as it maybe should be. As it is, Browser Checkup for Chrome by Doctor could give users a false sense of security.
It’s potentially unwanted
Some security vendors have a problem with Browser Checkup for Chrome by Doctor. Some consider it to be a browser hijacker, and an anti-malware app flags Getwebdoctor.com as Malware.
A few reviewers on the Chrome Web Store accuse Browser Checkup for Chrome by Doctor of being installed without permission. In addition, web analytics sites estimate that Browser Checkup for Chrome by Doctor shares traffic with Wise Ghost, and SecuryBrowse, two other browser hijackers. This makes the “Doctor” even more suspicious.
How to remove Browser Checkup for Chrome by Doctor
Although Browser Checkup for Chrome by Doctor doesn’t seem malicious, it might be best to avoid it. You can uninstall Browser Checkup for Chrome by Doctor easily by following the instructions below. It can also help to use an antivirus app (Spyhunter for Mac, Combo Cleaner for Mac, Spyhunter for PC, etc.) to protect your device.
If you want a security extension on your browser, it’s important to use a reputable one. I recommend choosing an extension made by a well-known company, as those apps have a lot of scrutiny placed on them.
Additionally, anti-malware apps like Malwarebytes flag suspicious and dangerous extensions, programs, and websites more effectively than Browser Checkup for Chrome by Doctor does.
