What is Catchnews.club?

Notification-abusing site

Catchnews.club is an advertising site or an advertising network that gets around the inconvenient need to have content to publish ads next to. Instead of attracting users to its sites by writing blog posts or filming cool videos, Catchnews.club just… gets access to people’s browsers via notifications and sends them ads by showing pop-ups.

Catchnews.club does this by lying to each visitor:

“Press Allow to verify, that you are not a robot

In reality, Catchnews.club needs people to press Allow because that button would agree to notifications being accepted from Catchnews.club to the current web browser. It’s like giving your email to a marketer, except that emails have spam filters and web browsers don’t.

Advertised online

You can’t go to Catchnews.club normally, as it just loads an empty page. You have to be redirected there. Lots of sites advertise Catchnews.club – video game mod sites, video to MP3 converters, and other file download sites.

What usually happens is something like this:

  1. You find a file that you want to download or a video you want to watch.
  2. You click the Play/Download button.
  3. Catchnews.club appears on the screen.
  4. If you don’t close it – maybe because it looks like a real human verification warning (it’s not) – you interact with the site.
  5. Whether you clicked Allow or Block, Catchnews.club loads another version of itself, and another. It keeps redirecting to another Catchnews.club site: from 0.Catchnews.club to 1.Catchnews.club up to 8.Catchnews.club.
  6. Ultimately, it opens an advertised site, such as Message-alert.info or Mono.biz, which are other notification spammers.

Catchnews.club says to press Allow to verify that you are not a robot.

Unwanted ads

After this, Catchnews.club begins sending spam to your browser.

Its ads range from scam pages to normal ads. Some of the ads are potentially dangerous. Fake prize draws and login pages meant for stealing people’s data. Fake antivirus tools meant to promote tech support scams. And various adware infections disguised as useful apps.

Other ads shown by Catchnews.club may be harmless but they’re still annoying.

Browser developers are aware of abusive notifications (Blog.chromium.org) and they are committed to curbing them. But so far, malicious sites continue to thrive.

How to stop Catchnews.club pop-ups

Remove malware

If there are malicious programs, app, or browser extensions on your device, delete them. They can cause unexpected sites to open in your browser, so if they’re allowed to stay, they’ll cause more problems going forward. In addition, Catchnews.club advertises some shady software, and it’s good to make sure that you didn’t download any of it.

You can find and remove malware yourself or get the help of an anti-malware tool like Spyhunter for Windows, Combo Cleaner for macOS, and others.

Look for recently-installed programs and apps and see if there’s something suspicious there. Also, check if all of your browser extensions were installed by you. Scammers use deceptive ads to trick people into downloading and installing adware, so it’s possible to end up with malware unknowingly.

Block notifications

As for stopping the Catchnews.club spam, you just need to block it by configuring your notification settings.

There’s a section in the settings of web browsers where sites that you’ve allowed to send notifications are listed (as well as sites whose notifications you’ve blocked). There are likely some unintended and unfamiliar sites there – simply because it’s easy to allow notifications by accident.

Go to the settings:

  • Chrome – type “chrome://settings/content/notifications” in the address box.
  • Safari – in the Safari menu, choose Preferences, Websites, Notifications.
  • Edge (Chromium) – type “edge://settings/content/notifications” in the address box.
  • Firefox – open Settings, Privacy & Security, scroll down to Permissions, and click on Settings next to Notifications.

Find all the Catchnews.club addresses, including 1.Catchnews.club, 2.Catchnews.club, etc. Look for other addresses that you don’t want to be able to send ads to your browser.

Remember that there’s also the list of sites whose notifications are blocked – don’t mix up the permissions.

Now, click the button to the right of each entry. That shows a drop-down with choices to Remove or Block the site. Choose Block. This moves Catchnews.club to the list of blocked sites and prevents it from spamming any more ads.

Consider blocking notifications completely.
