What is Cbsearch.site?
Fake search engine
Cbsearch.site is an alternative search engine. It’s a Google custom search engine (CSE). Google CSE is available for anyone to use for free, a customizable search tool. It’s meant for website owners to use as a search tool. Plus, the search results can be monetized with ads.
Cbsearch.site abuses the Google CSE to make a little bit of money. Someone took the Google CSE and, instead of using it to add search to their website, they created a website entirely composed of the search tool.
Adware with no features
Cbsearch.site is basically Google, but with more ads, no features, and worse privacy. The only thing it does well is display ads.
Cbsearch.site shows ads above the search results. The ads are many and often take up the whole screen, you have to scroll to see the results. That’s how it makes money – by displaying ads.
Other than that, there’s nothing. Cbsearch.site’s privacy policy is very vague about what data it collects, but the fact is that the site can collect a lot of data about its users. Though it promises not to sell our search terms, I don’t think I entirely trust it.
Then there’s the lack of features. Cbsearch.site does not provide image, video, news, maps, and other search result types. It also does not allow filtering the results based on language or date.
How CB Search spreads
Cbsearch.site is related to a ton of other Google CSE-abusing sites, including Searchluna.com, Mychromesearch.com, Lightening-search.com, Mybrowser-search.com, and others.
These sites tend to be advertised on video streaming sites and with innocuous browser extensions. If you see Cbsearch.site only occasionally when clicking an ad or visiting a website full of aggressive ads, then there’s nothing to worry about – just be careful on those sites. But if you see Cbsearch.site regularly, if it’s replaced your default search engine, then there’s a bad program causing this.
Try to remember if you installed something recently. Maybe a new browser extension, or an unusual software update? Maybe you saw an unusual pop-up that asked you to agree to something or to download something? Deceptive installation tactics can trick us into installing extensions that we don’t even want.
If you installed a browser extension before you started encountering Cbsearch.site, that extension may be the cause. Malicious browser extensions are very common. They tend to be stealthy and hard to spot.
How to remove Cbsearch.site
To avoid malicious ads, you can use an ad blocker or an antivirus program that has a web filter.
To find out what is causing Cbsearch.site to have hijacked your browser, scan your device with an anti-malware program, such as Spyhunter for Windows, Combo Cleaner for macOS, or other programs that you trust.
Check your recently-installed programs and apps. You can scan their executables, look up their names online to check their reputation, see if there are any unfamiliar and suspicious entries.
Check your browser extensions. Disable all of them (no exceptions) and see if the Cbsearch.site redirects disappear. If yes, then enable extensions one-by-one and until Cbsearch.site comes back and you find the culprit. Remove the offending extension.
There’s the chance that you can’t remove the extension – you may also see a warning that your browser is managed. This is fixable, it happens when a malicious installer makes certain changes to your settings to prevent an extension from being removed.
