CheckAMap is a malicious browser extension that hijacks web search results. Once installed, it takes over the default search engine settings and forwards all searches to iffy sites like Nearbyme.io.
Another problem is that CheckAMap gets installed without permission, often with the help of deceptive ads or by being bundled with other installers. Because of that, people whose browsers are hijacked by CheckAMap might not know about it.
If CheckAMap was installed on your browser, it’s recommended to remove it.

What is Feed.checkamap.com?
CheckAMap replaces the default search engine
CheckAMap is a browser add-on. It can be found on the Chrome Web Store, but only if you have the direct link. Nobody is finding this add-on organically, as it doesn’t even show up in search results.
And who would search for it? CheckAMap has no features to make it worth using. When installed on web browsers, it changes the default search engine setting – the setting that decides what website opens after you type a search query into your address bar. It makes all search queries go to Feed.checkamap.com, which immediately redirects to another site (Nearbyme.io or other).
In other words, when the extension CheckAMap is installed, it removes a web browser feature: the user can no longer choose their favorite search engine, now they have to go with whatever CheckAMap uses.
As a result, privacy is harmed. Feed.checkamap.com and the sites that it promotes log people’s search queries and may use this data for advertising. This is a problem because search data can include personal information.
It’s installed without permission
Despite being so hard to find and despite having no useful features (and actually robbing browsers of customization), CheckAMap has hundreds of installations.
And CheckAMap is far from the only search-hijacking browser add-on of this type. Some equally useless add-ons, like ThePDFConverterSearch and ConvertItSearch, have tens of thousands of installations.
Add-ons like these are often advertised online by very misleading ads, like the Download Ready template.
Ads like Recommended Extension and similar mislead people, tricking them into allowing unwanted extensions to be installed on their browser.
Deceptive ads like that are often shown by file download sites, pirating sites, online video converters, other sites that show aggressive ads.
Luckily, after CheckAMap is installed, Chrome does show a little warning about the user’s default search engine being changed to Feed.checkamap.com and makes it easy to immediately reverse the changes made by CheckAMap. Chrome can just disable the extension, which keeps it installed, but stops it from working.
How to stop the Feed.checkamap.com redirects
Uninstall the CheckAMap extension. The instructions can be found below.
Chrome users can also click on the puzzle button in the upper right, then click on CheckAMap’s three-dot menu and choose the “Remove” option.
In case the “Remove” option for CheckAMap is grayed out, if you see a warning that your browser is “managed by your organization”, check out these instructions: Stop managing Chrome browser.
To check your computer for adware and potentially unwanted programs, scan it with antivirus apps. You can use Spyhunter for PC, Spyhunter for Mac, Combo Cleaner for Mac, and other security apps.
If you use Chrome, another thing I recommend is turning on Enhanced protection if you haven’t already. This mode warns you before installed untrusted extensions, among other things.
It also helps to use ad blockers and malicious site blockers to avoid the sorts of deceptive ads that hijackers like CheckAMap use to spread.
