What is Coinup.org?
A search engine that rewards coins
Coinup.org is a website, a search engine. If it appears in your browser, it must be because of the Coinup Search browser extension.
At first, I thought it was related to the charity site Coinupapp.com, or maybe the Coinup.com online gaming system. But it seems like Coinup.org is not related to either of these sites. It is its own thing, despite the similar name.
Coinup.org is an alternative search engine. It lets you input a search query and then displays relevant results (with a few ads here and there). It’s certainly better than most fake search engines that we encounter – it even lets you choose between three result types – all, images, and videos. That’s more features than a hijacker like Searchlee.com provides.
Coinup.org’s thing is that it allows you to earn coins by searching on the site. Then, once you have enough coins, you’re allowed to exchange them for various rewards on Google Play, iTunes, and Amazon.
I first encountered Coinup.org when I was looking into old search hijackers Surf-live.com and Web-explore.com. For whatever reason, these sites forward to each other. A few years ago, Weknow.ac used to redirect to Coinup.org (it now opens Webcrawler.com). In addition, Search-story.com, another alternative search engine, is operated by Coinup.org’s company CoinUp Ltd. On its own, Coinup.org doesn’t seem suspicious. But if it’s related to those sites, then something is up.
A potentially unwanted extension
If you read the privacy policy that Coinup.org provides, you can see that the site collects your search history and which ads you click on. In addition, Coinup.org can read which icons you clicked on your home page/new tab page. And some technical data, of course. All this data may be used to help advertisers show you relevant ads.
Your search history might contain a lot of private information. The fact that Coinup.org can collect it all might be a problem.
Sites like Google and Bing let you see what information they’ve collected on you and even let you delete it. But Coinup.org is much harder to hold accountable this way. The same is true for lots of small sites and browser extensions. Some of them end up leaking user data, which exposes people’s personal information to anyone who wants to look for it. Not to mention, harmless extensions sometimes get sold and turned into adware.
This doesn’t mean that Coinup Search is intentionally malicious or harmful. It’s just that it might be careless with your data and your online security, so you might want to be careful of it.
How to remove Coinup.org redirect
It’s recommended to remove Coinup Search. It’s not good for your privacy and though it does have basic search engine features, it still lacks a lot. For example, Coinup.org doesn’t display the sorts of info cards that mainstream search engines show.
Reward sites are rarely worth it anyway. And besides, Coinup.org’s association with various potentially unwanted search engines might threaten your online safety in the future.
It’s recommended to uninstall the Coinup Search extension as described in the instructions at the bottom. It’s also good to look at your other extensions and applications. See if you have any installed that you don’t want to be there.
You can use anti-malware apps, such as Combo Cleaner for macOS, Spyhunter for Windows, and others. They will warn you if suspicious and potentially unwanted programs are present on your device.
