ConvertDocsOnline is a simple browser hijacker. It takes over your home page and new tab page, posts a bunch of ads on it, and encourage you to use its search engine so that it can profit from your traffic.

Web browsers are the programs we use to access the internet. Many, many websites are monetized by ads that they show. While most of those sites provide some kind of value (such as interesting content), some companies look for ways to show ads without having to create attractive websites.

Here are the effects ConvertDocsOnline can have on your browser:

• Show pop-up ads in the corner of your screen.
• Replace your new tab page and post ads on it.
• Promote the Search.myway.com search engine.
• Read your browsing history.

ConvertDocsOnline is a newtab virus, a browser hijacker. Sure, it has a file converter box on it, so you could say that it does provide some kind of utility. But ConvertDocsOnline could easily provide that utility without taking over your home page. The truth is, the file converter button is just an excuse for ConvertDocsOnline to take over your home page and use it as an advertising board.

File converting alternatives

Don’t worry about converting files. In most cases, converting documents to PDF can be done by exporting them (open the document in its editor, click the File menu, click Export, or just press the Ctrl+P or Cmd+P buttons). Many other file types can also be converted very easily by exporting them.

The problem is, when you look for file converting instructions online, you get a bunch of results from third-party sites that want to show ads to you. To attract visitors, those sites promise to convert your files for you. But they offer less control over the process and less privacy. When looking for help online, I advise you to stick to reputable sites, support sites, and to user forums. “ConvertDocsOnline” and similarly generic names should be avoided.

How ConvertDocsOnline spreads

ConvertDocsOnline could be seen advertised online, on file download sites, on software download sites, and bundled with various installers that you can get on freeware sites. Malicious redirects (when a website randomly redirects you to a malicious site, usually because it was infected (yeah, websites get infected, too)) may also have been responsible for showing ConvertDocsOnline ads.

Now, though, I’m not sure if ConvertDocsOnline is promoted anymore. It is currently trying to get its users to go and install FromDocToPDF, an extremely similar browser hijacker.

ConvertDocsOnline is made by Mindspark. Usually, Mindspark’s extensions try to get people to install a search hijacker – Search Extension by Ask. That’s because the Mindspark and Ask companies are related (they are oned by the same company).

I advise you to remove ConvertDocsOnline and to stay away from FromDocToPDF, too, as it’s the exact same hijacker, just with a slightly different name.

How to remove ConvertDocsOnline

Uninstall ConvertDocsOnline and other potentially unwanted browser hijackers in your browser settings, the extensions section.

You can also use an antivirus app like Combo Cleaner for macOS, Spyhunter for Windows, or another one that you are comfortable with. It’s a second pair of eyes to check if there are any malicious or low-reputation programs on your device.

• Click on a Chrome’s menu button (three horizontal lines) and select Settings.
• Scroll to the end of the page and click on theReset browser settings button.

• Click on the menu button on the top right corner of a Microsoft Edge window. Select “Extensions”.

• Press the Restore settings to their default values option.

• Go through Extensions and Addons list, remove everything ConvertDocsOnline Hijacker related and items you do not recognise. If you do not know the extension and it is not made by Mozilla, Google, Microsoft, Oracle or Adobe then you probably do not need it.
  
• If your homepage was changed, click on the Firefox menu in the top right corner, select Options → General. Enter a preferable URL to the homepage field and click Restore to Default.
