“Search and access popular maps quick links instantly form your new tab page!”
The extension’s map functionality is not impressive at all, but Earth and Satellite Maps is very good at delivering ads to users.
What Earth and Satellite Maps does
An extension that changes your home page and new tab page to Search.hearthandsatellitemaps.com (something that you can do without any extensions). A search bar for addresses is there for you to quickly find directions. With Earth and Satellite Maps it’s only one click away from your home page — as opposed to two clicks that you need on the same browser without the extension.
Earth and Satellite Maps home page lacks a lot of features that a normal online map would have. But it does have links to sponsored and sponsor sites. This lack of useful features is not surprising when you realise that Earth and Satellite Maps is adware — software that only wants to be installed so that it can show you advertisements.
How it affects browsing
Adware like Earth and Satellite Maps offers very little that’s useful, but do a lot in terms of advertising to you, collecting my information, promoting various products. It hijacks the browser and spies on you just to show more targeted ads.
Earth and Satellite Maps is made by Eightpoint Technologies Ltd., a sister company to Polarity Technologies Ltd. Polarity has developed a huge number of clone extensions that all do the same thing: change your home page and search engine.
The new search engine allows search results to be filled with ads, making it annoying to find the actual results. Sometimes I got 8 ads for 7 results. Yes, other search engines also advertise in result, but they aren’t so bad as to have more commercials than content. So searching with Earth and Satellite Maps installed either requires me to sift through ads to find results, or to go through additional steps to go to the search engine that I want. This negatively affects my browsing experience, my productivity, and my mood.
The abundance of ads on websites that Earth and Satellite Maps directs me to also slows down the computer and strains the CPU. Another problem is malicious ads. There is always a chance to encounter some, but having adware installed definitely raises the odds. Scams and Ponzi schemes, phishing sites, infected websites that download viruses might be directed to by some ads, and ad-networks can’t always catch them all.
Marketing really benefits from knowing more about their target. So Earth and Satellite Maps and the related websites collect and record data like your device, your operating system, your IP, search queries (this one is terrible for privacy!), and your location. Earth and Satellite Maps uses this information to, among other things, “help advertisers and publishers connect with you to offer relevant advertising in their apps and websites”.
How browser hijackers are distributed
Earth and Satellite Maps can be found and installed organically, by looking for something relevant online. With browser hijackers and adware, you are essentially tricked into installing what you believe is a good product, but is actually a platform for marketing to you. So, a lot of browser hijackers and adware promote themselves as practical tools, such as document converters, hardware optimisers, or privacy protectors. Then people install them and find how poor the functionality of the tool actually is.
Bundling is another way that unwanted software spreads. For example, Earth and Satellite Maps uses budling to promote Search Encrypt — another browser hijacker that sometimes promotes unwanted software. Software bundling often results in people accidentally and unknowingly installing programs. This is unethical, especially because a lot of inexperienced computer users might have difficulty recognising malware and knowing how to remove it. Some people whose browsing experience is compromised by a browser hijacker might just deal with it because they don’t know that redirects, popup ads, and search results filled with ads are not the norm.
How to get rid of Earth and Satellite Maps
You can remove the Earth and Satellite Maps extension, but you will also probably need to edit your browser settings to stop notifications from bothering you. The way to manually remove the extension can be found below.
Since Earth and Satellite Maps is not a virus, you can continue using it if you wish. But, in case you accidentally downloaded something (this can happen very easily), there could some sort of malware or potentially unwanted software installed on your computer that won’t go away even after you fix your browser. Try using an antivirus program that you trust, for example, Spyhunter, to examine your programs and files, and remove threats if any are found.
