How Easy Current News Access gets installed
Easy Current News Access gets recommended by another browser extension. There are these sites that only exist to push browser extensions. While looking for Google Maps, I found one map site that promised to find the satellite view of any address – Streetview.net. I typed something in and was told to install a browser extension to see the results. Then another and another one.
I’ve seen a shipment tracking add-on, an obituary-related extension, and a breaking news new-tab do this type of thing. They get installed and immediately open Youreasycurrentnewsaccess.com, which asks you to “Continue”. Unintuitively, “Continue” here means “install a whole new extension”. So you may end up with three or more browser extensions that you didn’t ask for. It’s deceptive and predatory.
But how do people find these browser hijacker-pushing sites in the first place? The cause is manipulated internet search results. Did you notice suspiciously many ads at the top of the internet search page? Did search results sometimes open other search result pages (Info.com, Zapmeta.com, Pronto.com, etc.)? Did your default search result site change recently? If so, you may have had a browser hijacker messing with your web search. It’s simple to remove it, once you realize the problem.
Another possibility is getting Easy Current News Access installed by a freeware bundler. Bundling is a way to monetize free programs by taking money from developers of various other programs and then bundling their apps with the main free program. Unfortunately, it’s often done in a way where it’s easy to accidentally let all the offers to get installed.
What is Easy Current News Access
Easy Current News Access changes your web browser’s default search engine to Yahoo. Its goal is to gather data on your browsing habits and to influence which sites you are likely to visit. Easy Current News Access can then inflate those sites’ traffic and make them advertising money.
As a front, though, Easy Current News Access is a news-focused browser add-on that can help you keep up with the news. It’s supposed to “enhances your default search with streamlined news search capabilities”, as it says on Youreasycurrentnewsaccess.com. However, all it does it open CNN. That’s literally all it does. Maybe my version of Easy Current News Access is broken, but then it’s also broken for the other twenty thousand people who have this extension in their browsers.
In other words, Easy Current News Access:
- appears as a screen of another browser extension’s installation,
- asks to be able to show you notifications,
- claims to help you keep up with the news,
- changes your search settings,
- reads your browsing history,
- does not actually help you keep up with the news.
Not all browser extensions are bad like Easy Current News Access, but many of them do things like logging your browsing history or showing you pop-up ads. They do this to make a bit of money. The developer spent time developing the extension and they may want a return on investment. Often, that means wasting your time and intruding on your privacy. So, always carefully weigh if you’re willing to deal with these free products.
If you want to add a few news websites to your browser for easy access, you can do that pretty easily – but only after getting rid of any and all browser hijackers.
How to remove Easy Current News Access
To do that, you should open browser extension settings and review your extensions. Remove (or disable) all the add-ons that are installed in your web browser that you don’t remember installing, do not use, or are suspicious of. The instructions with screenshots are in the following section.
If your browser is still not back to normal, check the other extensions. Disable all of them until the problem disappears. Or scan your computer with an anti-malware program, such as Combo Cleaner for macOS, Spyhunter for Windows, or another tool. An antivirus scan can tell you if there are still any potentially unwanted programs on your device.
Also, I mentioned that Youreasycurrentnewsaccess.com offers to show you notifications. If you allowed them, you might sometimes see pop-ups offering more browser extensions and other products. You can check this article on web notifications to learn how to turn off these pop-up ads.
