What is Express-news.me?
Express-news.me is a malicious website that has two functions:
- Get people to subscribe to its notifications.
- Send ads via notifications.
Express-news.me behaves like some sort of a shady advertising platform. It makes money from showing ads to unwilling people who were tricked into allowing its notifications.
Express-news.me is similar to Kinobot.pw, 1video-online.me, Mailclick.biz, and other notification hijackers.
Express-news.me sneaks into browser notifications
Advertised online
People don’t visit Express-news.me on their own. After all, the site has no content.
Instead, it’s advertised on certain websites – “free” movie, sports, ebook, etc. sites, other dubious sites.
When Express-news.me is advertised, it opens in a new browser tab. It might expand to full screen. Then, it asks the browser to show the notification prompt – the little box that lets you Allow or Block the site’s messages. If you don’t click “Allow”, Express-news.me won’t be able to send you ads.
Express-news.me lies to visitors
But why would anyone intentionally let a random site send them notifications? They wouldn’t. This is why Express-news.me shows fake messages, like “Press Allow to verify that you are not a robot”. This message is completely fake. It’s like if someone came up to you on the street and asked for your email address for “reasons”.
Notifications can be valuable when employed by honest and trustworthy websites. Sadly, many sites use them for advertising and “engagement”. Browser developers know that this is a problem. You can disable notification prompts – this will stop notification hijackers from taking over your browser.
It’s aggressive adware
Express-news.me shows ads on device screens
When Express-news.me has wormed its way into your browser, it might start showing ads. Then, it feels like your email spam folder is spilling out on your screen.
It’s best to avoid opening any ads from Express-news.me. This can be difficult, though – some of the ads can be disguised as notifications from legitimate and trusted websites, as well as system notifications. Be careful – all ads from Express-news.me should still be labeled with the site’s name.
Some of the ads lead to harmful content
While some of the ads shown by Express-news.me are safe, others are dangerous:
- Phishing messages – schemes to steal your login information and other personal data. They appear as fake social media DMs and friend requests.
- Tech support scams – fake and very expensive tech support services. They are promoted with fake virus alerts.
- Scams that seek to get you to pay for useless apps and services. They’re promoted by fake giveaways and fake virus alerts.
How to stop ads from Express-news.me
Block Express-news.me’s notifications
Open your browser and go into your settings for managing notifications:
- Chrome – open Settings, scroll down to Site settings (under Privacy and security), click on Notifications.
- Edge – open Settings, click Site Permissions, Notifications.
- Safari – in the Safari menu, choose Preferences, Websites, Notifications.
- Firefox – open Settings, Privacy & Security, scroll down to Permissions, and click on Settings next to Notifications.
Here, you can block notifications from Express-news.me and other sites.
Your browser has two lists of website addresses: those that are blocked from sending you notifications and those that are allowed. You should see Express-news.me listed as being “Allowed” to send you messages. You need to flip that to “Blocked”.
This will stop Express-news.me from ever sending you another pop-up (you might still need to dismiss the ones that it’s already sent), as well as from asking you to allow its notifications. But this won’t block the Express-news.me site.
Avoid malicious websites
Sites such as Express-news.me and Kinobot.pw are advertised online, often on pirating websites and other iffy sites. And the ads for Express-news.me are not obvious at all: they might pop up when you try to watch a video or download a file, then expand to full screen. Normal ads don’t behave this way.
Such ads can cause problems much more serious than some Express-news.me ad spam; sometimes, they can lead to scams and malware. Therefore, it’s good to protect your computer with an anti-malware program, such as Spyhunter for Mac, Combo Cleaner for Mac, Spyhunter for PC, Malwarebytes, etc.
Remember that some anti-malware programs detect more mild threats, while others focus on serious malware. Choose a security program that fits your needs.
But to just avoid sites like Express-news.me, it might be enough to use an ad blocker. Ad blockers help make pirating sites, video converters, and similar ad-filled sites much more bearable to navigate. It’s safer to stay away from such websites altogether, but an ad blocker would help you stay safe.
