Fileconvertersearches.com is a malicious browser add-on that hijacks internet search settings. It spreads with the help of misleading ads and, once installed, does nothing but redirect search and log user data. It may also get access to your notifications and show pop-up ads. It’s not very harmful but it’s certainly not helpful. Luckily, it is simple to remove.

How to remove Fileconvertersearches.com
Remove FileConverterSearches
Uninstall the FileConverterSearches extension, block notifications from Fileconvertersearches.com, and make sure there aren’t any malicious software on your device. Then, you can rest knowing that Fileconvertersearches.com can’t mess with your browser any longer.
I put the browser extension removal instructions at the bottom. In short, you can remove them from the extension area in the upper right corner of your browser or from the Extensions page which you can open from the browser’s main menu.
If you can’t remove FileConverterSearches, you may want to check out our post on extensions that use the enterprise policy to remain installed.
Block pop-up ads
If Fileconvertersearches.com is showing pop-ups on your screen, that might not be caused by the FileConverterSearches. They need to be removed separately.
Go into your browser’s notification settings:
- Chrome – type “chrome://settings/content/notifications” in the address box.
- Safari – in the Safari menu, choose Preferences, Websites, Notifications.
- Edge (Chromium) – type “edge://settings/content/notifications” in the address box.
- Firefox – open Settings, Privacy & Security, scroll down to Permissions, and click on Settings next to Notifications.
If Fileconvertersearches.com is listed among the sites that are allowed to send notifications, that’s the problem. Click the button next to Fileconvertersearches.com’s address and select “Block” (“Remove” is also fine). Now your browser won’t show any more pop-ups from Fileconvertersearches.com.
If a random site says that it wants to show notifications, don’t click the Allow button. But if you do, you now know how to take back your permission and stop notification spam.
Delete malware
It might be good to scan your computer with an antivirus app, such as Combo Cleaner for macOS, Spyhunter for Windows, or other scanners. This is especially important if you don’t know how Fileconvertersearches.com got installed and if, even after removing Fileconvertersearches.com, you still have some problems with strange browser behavior.
It’s good to always have an antivirus program looking after your computer, especially an antivirus program that can recognize PUPs (potentially unwanted programs) and block malicious websites for you. That way, you might be able to avoid malware even while visiting shady and unsafe sites.

Unusual browser behavior
Once FileConverterSearches is installed, here are the effects you might notice:
- Internet searches going to Yahoo even if you didn’t use Yahoo before.
- Search results taking a bit longer than usual to show up (because of the redirects).
- Search results having unusually many ads.
- Pop-up ads from Fileconvertersearches.com showing up on top of other sites.
While FileConverterSearches is installed, it has control over your default search engine. It’s very inconvenient because though you can still use whatever search engine you like, you have to open them manually instead of having your browser use them automatically.
Security and privacy risks
In theory, FileConverterSearches could also open new tabs in your browser that lead to advertised sites. Adware viruses do that sort of thing – periodically open ads in new tabs in your browser.
In addition, Fileconvertersearches.com has access to your searches and can log them. According to Fileconvertersearches.com’s privacy policy, search logs are not considered personal information, so there’s that.
Generally, it’s important to use only trusted sites because, ultimately, we have no control over what they do with our information. I trust Google to not redirect me to malicious websites when I try to use it because it’s a heavily scrutinized company. I don’t believe that I can trust Fileconvertersearches.com the same way.
How FileConverterSearches spreads
Fileconvertersearches.com is advertised on various pirating, torrenting, and file download sites. Pop-ups for Fileconvertersearches.com open in a new tab in your browser when you try to watch a video or download a file. The new tab page promoting Fileconvertersearches.com may look something like this:
Or it might be a “Recommended Extension” pop-up or a “Ready: Install” page. The point is, Fileconvertersearches.com’s ads are dishonest because they attempt to confuse us and to get us to download something we don’t want.
That, combined with the fact that FileConverterSearches is not obvious once installed, makes it a good browser hijacker and a harmful extension.
Fileconvertersearches.com is similar to Anystationsearch.com, PDF Converter HD Search, and other browser hijackers.
