How FrequencySkill hijacks a Mac
Unwanted installation
You must have accidentally installed FrequencySkill yourself. It’s not your fault, though – malicious actors have perfected the art of tricking people into downloading and installing malware.
- Usually, it begins with a browser redirect or an aggressive pop-up.
- The pop-up leads to a page that asks you to download an important update. This webpage looks authoritative and trustworthy.
- If you follow the instructions, you download a file that has its own unusual installation instructions. They are designed to get around some of the macOS’ security measures.
- FrequencySkill installs in the background, without you knowing about it or agreeing to it. It might throw up a few big, empty pop-ups to cover up macOS’ system warnings and trick you into dismissing them by clicking what look like simple OK buttons.
Bundled with free app installers, offered by misleading ads, injected into counterfeit software updates – FrequencySkill abuses your trust to sneak into your Mac.
Anti-malware apps may detect FrequencySkill as AdWare, AdAgent, Malicious, Suspicious, AdLoad, and by other names: VirusTotal.com. However, the file that installs FrequencySkill may be called “Player.dmg”, “Flash.dmg”, and similar (a fake Flash Player update warning is a common trick used to spread malware ) and be detected as a Trojan, Downloader, and Malware.
Browser hijacking and other problems
FrequencySkill wants to log your browsing data and to hijack your traffic. Its makers profit from this.
Most noticeably, FrequencySkill changes your browsers’ home pages and default search engines. When you search now, your results might take longer to appear, you might see a few redirects in your address bar. SearchMarquis, SearchBaron, Safe Finder, Yahoo, and other sites might appear even if you never used them before.
In the background, FrequencySkill collects data about your computer, your browsing history, which ads and results you click on, and info on your computer. There’s a FrequencySkill app as well as a browser add-on. In addition, FrequencySkill might try to install other extensions.
Your network settings might have been changed, too. This could cause your internet connection to be slow or unreliable.
FrequencySkill might have an icon of a blue-green circle with a while magnifying glass, a white circle with a blue magnifying glass, or something similar. You can see it in your Dock. It might start automatically when you open Safari.
How to remove FrequencySkill
Overview
There are a few parts to deleting FrequencySkill:
- Find and delete the FrequencySkill app and browser add-on, as well as any other malicious files and apps.
- Check your system and browser settings and change them as needed.
- If you suspect that FrequencySkill may have been able to see any of your passwords, reset those passwords and make sure that you have 2FA set up.
Delete FrequencySkill
Delete malware automatically
Find FrequencySkill in your Applications folder and drag it to Trash. Then scan your Mac with an anti-malware application, such as Combo Cleaner, Malwarebytes, and others.
This might not work – FrequencySkill might return a few hours or days later, persistent malware that it is. It might even change its name to AssistiveModule, LogarithmicRecord, OperativeDevice, or another remarkably meaningless and bland name.
Use safe mode
In that case, reboot your Mac into safe mode (Support.apple.com) and try again. To access safe mode, restart your Mac, then hold Shift on your keyboard until the login screen appears.
Check system settings
If this also doesn’t work, then find and delete unwanted configuration profiles:
- Open System Preferences.
- Find the Profiles icon (the icon is only visible if there are profiles on your Mac).
- Select all the profiles that you don’t recognize.
- Delete them with the minus ‘-‘ button in the lower-left corner.
You can also look for FrequencySkill files and settings in System Preferences, Users & Groups, Login Items. Just like in Profiles, remove all unfamiliar or unwanted items.
While you’re in System Preferences, open Network, Advanced, then Proxies. In the box on the left, is anything selected? If yes, and if you did not select the protocols yourself, deselect and then press OK.
As for the browser settings, you can find the instructions at the bottom, in the Check browser settings section.
Delete suspicious files
Your antivirus app should have found and deleted FrequencySkill’s files but in case it did not, you can look in these folders:
- /Library/LaunchAgents,
- ~/Library/LaunchAgents,
- /Library/LaunchDaemons,
- /Library/Application Support,
- ~/Library/Application Support.
These are hidden folders (hidden because they hold important files for many of your apps) that you can open by using the Go to Folder dialog in Finder. Look for it in Finder’s Go menu. Then just type in the folder name.
FrequencySkill and other malicious apps may have files and settings hidden in these folders. These files may have recent dates added or modified, their names might not match any apps that you have on your Mac, their names might even be random.
Delete suspicious files. This should remove FrequencySkill for sure. Scan your Mac again to confirm that no malware is left.
Reset your passwords
In theory, FrequencySkill might have been able to see your usernames, passwords, credit card numbers, and other info either as you were typing it, or if it was saved in your browser. If you think this happened, then you might want to go into each of the potentially affected accounts and reset your passwords. This way, even if FrequencySkill did steal any passwords, no one will be able to use them.
