Fresh-tab.info is a website. Fresh Tab is a browser extension. The two are related and work together to replace the new tabs and browser search settings of web browsers.

The new tab is the page that you see when you open a new browser tab by clicking the ‘+’ plus button at the top of the browser window. Lots of people use their new tab page to start searching the web and visiting their favorite sites. And lots of browser extensions try to replace that page and inject themselves into people’s browsing habits.

When Fresh Tab is installed, it replaces the new tab page and the default search engine:

• The extension replaces the browser’s default search engine with Fresh-tab.info. This redirects to Search-land.com which might open Google.com.
• Fresh Tab also replaces your new tab and home pages with Fresh-tab.info. If you use the Fresh-tab.info search bar to search the web, it opens Bing.com’s results.

What features does it have?

Fresh Tab is operated by Girema Holdings Limited. This company is apparently also behind sites like Lyrics Search, Image Search, PDF Tab, Video Search, Hashtag Search. Some of these extensions don’t seem to work or even exist right now, though.

The Fresh-tab.info new tab page is very similar to Launchpage.org, Bestmatchingg.com, Yourbestsearching.com, Adext0.xyz, etc. They are very minimalistic: plain white background, a search box that only goes to one site – which you don’t get to choose -, and a few links to popular sites which, again, you don’t get to customize.

Fresh-tab.info has less functionality and customization than what your browser offers by default.

Fresh Tab also gets to read a lot of your data. It logs your browsing history, your search terms, which search results you clicked. While this data is anonymous, Fresh-tab.info does assign your traffic an ID, so it can still be tracked.

How is Fresh Tab installed?

Fresh-tab.info promotes the Fresh Tab extension as a tool that helps you “explore the web even better”. In its Chrome Web Store description, it just says that it redirects you to Bing.

The Web Store shows that Fresh Tab has more than 40,000 users. But why would anyone install such an extension in favor of just changing their search settings themselves (as described in the instructions below)? And how do people even find Fresh-tab.info?

One of the ways that potentially unwanted add-ons spread is by being bundled with freeware installers. Some software download sites offer free installers that are bundled with adware and other promoted programs. They are presented in a way that leads people to install them without meaning to.

Some apps might even install software without asking you, although this is uncommon.

Deceptive ads and redirects, notification ads, bundled extensions (fake “continue installation” pages), and other ads can also be used to trick people into installing unwanted extensions.
