Gamers Tab is a browser add-on that sets Gamers-tab.xyz as the new tab page. Though Gamers-tab.xyz appears to be a simple new tab replacer, it looks more like a newtab virus – an advertising-focused extension that is more interested in controlling user activity than enhancing browsers. While Gamers Tab is not dangerous, it is potentially unwanted and should probably be removed.

Problems with Gamers-tab.xyz
Gamers Tab lacks useful features
I first came across Gamers-tab.xyz while looking at Mediasearch.xyz and Flashsearch.xyz, a couple of search hijackers. Gamers-tab.xyz is not that – it is much milder and can hardly even be considered a threat. Still, it looks close to a browser hijacker (very close to Multi-tab.xyz), so I believe that it should be avoided.
When the Gamers Tab extension is installed, it replaces the new tab page – the page most of us see when we open a new tab in our browsers – with Gamers-tab.xyz. Gamers-tab.xyz is marketed as a minimalist new tab, but while having fewer features than the basic new tab page, it also has unnecessary restrictions, such as what site will deliver your internet search results.
Normally, browser extensions add features to web browsers (turn on dark mode, block advertisements, help manage passwords, etc.). New tab replacers (like Gamers Tab) often include various widgets that expand customization options.
However, Gamers Tab lacks any useful features that would improve the user experience. It replaces your new tab with a static page – no more background pictures, no frequently visited websites, and no gaming-related features. (How to Customize the Google Chrome New Tab Page Without Extensions).
As a result, Gamers-tab.xyz looks less like a genuine new tab and more like a newtab virus – a page solely meant to direct users to sponsored websites and advertisements.
Newtab viruses don’t ask to be installed
In general, people don’t install extensions like Gamers Tab voluntarily. We’ve seen many, many browser hijackers that looked just like Gamers-tab.xyz. They always had to rely on misleading ads and bundling to get anyone to install them:
- Ads made to look like “Download”, “Start”, etc. buttons. Usually, they can be seen on freeware and mod download sites.
- Pop-ups with fake “Download” and “Continue” links, as well as “recommended” browser extensions. Similar to the fake download button ads, these pop-ups try to trick people into installing potentially unwanted extensions.
- Installers for free programs that have ads in them, aka bundlers (InstallCore). Bundlers are often designed to sneak optional software past us, which causes potentially unwanted apps to be installed without permission.
Even just somewhat misleading design can lead to a negative user experience. Luckily, there are a few ways to improve your safety:
- Use ad blockers when visiting risky websites.
- Have an anti-malware app scan your downloads.
- Never install an unknown browser extension, even if a website tells you to.
It’s always better to prevent an infection than to deal with it later. Some adware infections are incredibly persistent (such as the OpticalRatePro adware). Luckily, removing most newtab viruses, including Gamers Tab, is very simple.
