What is Games Lol about?
Games.lol has mobile games extracted from Google Play and App Store and made easily playable on the PC and Mac. It’s mostly targeted at teenagers: one of the selling points is the ability to play the games on school and library networks, where sites like Games.lol are usually blocked. Games Lol brags of not misleading their users with ripoff games and not showing obnoxious and dangerous pop-ups and redirect ads. As far as I can tell, they’re not lying about not having ads on their own site, but that’s not the whole story.
Games Lol’s games are executables and are different from emulators that can run almost any application. Supposedly, every converted app has a control scheme changed to fit keyboard-and-mouse controls and has integration with the stores.
People find Games.lol when they search for ways to play mobile games on their Mac or PC. Then when they try to download a game from it, they’re told to install Games Lol in their browser. It enables file downloads from Games.lol and it allows Games.lol to make some money from your search.
Games Lol redirects your web searches and shows ads in your web search results. To accomplish this, it changes your default search engine. With that, Games Lol can control what you see in your internet searches and it can make money off of the ads there. As its privacy policy reveals, your search and browsing history are used for behavioral ads.
Games Lol is search-hijacking adware
After installing Games Lol, you’re finally taken to a page to download the game you wanted. It downloads an executable file. This file then asks you to consent to terms of service and then starts downloading the game. Not exactly a smooth process.
But we’re talking about the Games Lol extension and its effects on your browser. Here, I think that Games Lol was misrepresented in the Chrome Store. The screenshots there made it look like it was a useful extension, but mine hangs, sometimes refuses to open, and instead redownloads the file I just downloaded. And the screenshots showed the Yahoo search engine, while it actually sent me to Ibrowsersearch.com.
Ibrowsersearch.com is one of those Custom Search engines that Google allows people to create. It’s meant for making specialized search engines and filtering sites that can be searched, but some people create basic Google ripoffs, trick people to use them, and then claim the ad revenue.
Ibrowsersearch.com does search the internet, but it doesn’t have a lot of basic functions, like filtering results by time or looking for videos. Worse, it shows a lot of ads. These ads tend to lead to dubious sites like Zapmeta.com and pages for browser hijackers like FunPopularGames. It’s quite annoying because pretty much the whole screen after a search is filled with ads that are often irrelevant to what I searched for.
Sure, Games Lol may want to be compensated for their work. They could put up ads on their site or ask for donations. But instead, they ask you to install an extension that messes with your search settings all the time.
Not to mention how suspicious the Games Lol extension is. It’s quite similar to some other search hijackers, like Search Manager, E-installer, and EasyConvert. Search hijacking is a lucrative business with hundreds of individual extensions belonging to huge adware networks. Games Lol (the extension) looks like it’s professionally made advertising software and not just a little project. This means that your private information might not stay so private.
How to remove Games Lol
It’s up to you whether to keep Games Lol installed. You can disable it while you’re no using it. But I would advise you to remove it. There’s no need for you to expose yourself to more dangerous ads. You can remove Games Lol in your browser settings or by right-clicking on the extension’s icon and choosing the “Remove” option.
It’s also a good idea to scan your computer. Who knows what you might have caught after clicking on a few of the shady ads on Ibrowsersearch.com. And one or two of the files from Games Lol did catch the attention of some antivirus programs. You can just sweep through your system with a reliable anti-malware scanner, like Combo Cleaner for Mac, SpyHunter for PC, or Malwarebytes. If you find some malware, it’s best to remove it before it causes any issues.
