Get News Fast is actually considered to be malicious by quite a few reputable antivirus programs. The program is blacklisted for a few different reasons: poor reputation, intrusive settings modification, adware. Get News Fast is developed by SpringTech Ltd or Eightpoint Technologies Ltd, a company responsible for a few other browser hijackers, like FreeForms and Local Weather Radar.
How does Get News Fast spread?
Get News Fast has its own homepage that allows people to download it. It doesn’t make it completely clear that Get News Fast is an extension or what it does, other than that it allows you to “Read News”. When you click the big, bright CONTINUE button, you’re prompted to install the extension. In Chrome, Get News Fast opens a pop-up window that cuts off the description, the privacy policy, and the (in the case of Get News Fast, very suspicious) reviews. This framing of the installation process is suspicious. Due to a lot of complaints and abuse of the system, Chrome does not allow extensions to be installed from the homepages of websites anymore. Get News Fast is not acting in good faith here.
Another unfortunate way that browser hijackers spread is adware. Adware programs, websites, and extensions are used for advertising by the types of pages that are known to be risky or even dangerous. Most of the extensions advertised that way that I’ve seen are those created by the same company as Get News Fast.
Lastly, Get News Fast uses budling to push other unwanted add-ons to your browser. This is problematic. Thanks to bundling, you might end up installing a program you don’t want to, just because there’s no way to decline. You might install a program accidentally or even without knowing about it because the additional software is hidden in some fine print. Bundling — attaching unwanted applications to a wanted program — is incredibly easy to abuse and is widely used by malware, which is why using it casts a shadow on SpringTech. In the case of Get News Fast, it bundles Search Encrypt, an extension that tries to prevent you from using search engines other than the ones approved by it and Get News Fast.
What does Get News Fast do?
The main function of this toolbar is to direct your searches to the search engine that Get News Fast wants you to use. A search engine is just the website that you use to find you the pages that have the information that you’re looking for, such as Bing, DuckDuckGo, or Google.
You can’t install Get News Fast without it changing your search engine. This toolbar promotes the Yahoo! search site. Yahoo is functional, not malicious or dangerous, though it is known for filling the results page with ads when you search for anything remotely purchasable. Get News Fast adds to that by collecting a lot of information about the habits of its users, such as the search terms, what you click on, where you are, and a lot of other little things. This data is shared with advertisers, who can then show more relevant and effective ads to you.
When Get News Fast is not linking to Yahoo, it’s encouraging people to visit news.mynewswire.co, a notification-pushing site associated with multiple unwanted extensions. That site wants to push notifications to you, which can be abused to act like pop-up ads.
How to remove Get News Fast
Get News Fast makes its removal as difficult as it can. For example, on the IE, Get News Fast removes itself from the list of add-ons so that it can’t be uninstalled normally. On Chrome, it bundles another extension to more effectively take over the browser; to restore Chrome you’ll need to remove more extensions.
If you’re seeing pop-up ads, this article describes how to disable notifications. If you want to check your computer for adware and remove malicious software automatically, you can use a professional and reputable antivirus program: Spyhunter, or another application that you trust and that has a good reputation (there actually are fake antivirus programs out there, so be cautious).
Before installing extensions, remember that they can be abused by criminals, inadvertently putting their users in danger. Only very trusted programs should be allowed access to your browser (the same goes for desktop applications). There even are malicious browser extensions, even on the official stores — be careful out there.
