How to remove GetVideoSearch

Remove malware

GetVideoSearch is a browser add-on. To stop it from messing with your internet searches, you need to remove it. You could install another search extension on top of it and stop its hijacking that way, but there’s no need to leave it to lurk in the background.

You should also check your other extensions and remove those that look suspicious. It’s common for hijackers to spread in groups.

Remove malware, bad extensions, and potentially unwanted software with antivirus programs, like Spyhunter for Windows, Combo Cleaner for macOS.

Stop notification spam

Even after removing GetVideoSearch, you might still get unwanted pop-up ads from Getvideosearch.com or other sites.

Block unwanted notifications by clicking on an unwanted pop-up or in your browser settings.

  • Chrome – open Settings, scroll down to Site settings (under Privacy and security), click on Notifications.
  • Edge (Chromium) – open Settings, click Site Permissions, Notifications.
  • Safari – in the Safari menu, choose Preferences, Websites, Notifications.
  • Firefox – open SettingsPrivacy & Security, scroll down to Permissions, and click on Settings next to Notifications.

Find all the sites that are allowed to send notifications to your browser. Block those that you don’t want to hear from.

This doesn’t block the sites, only their notifications (the little pop-up messages). It is completely reversible.

GetVideoSearch has a home page but doesn't show it to its users.

Problems with GetVideoSearch

Once installed, GetVideoSearch sets Feed.getvideosearch.com as the new default search engine. This makes it so that when you search the internet on a browser that has GetVideoSearch installed, your search queries go to Feed.getvideosearch.com.

Even if you first navigate to another search site, like Google.com, the GetVideoSearch extension can still see it and, if it wants, it can still redirect to another site.

It collects user data, too. GetVideoSearch logs your search queries and which results and ads you clicked. According to its privacy policy, that data may be used to recommend content based on your preferences. Chrome does not allow browser extensions to sell user data or to use it for personalized advertising, so I am not sure how to interpret GetVideoSearch’s privacy policy.

In addition, GetVideoSearch may show ads on your screen, either in the corner as little pop-ups, or by opening whole new browser tabs.

How GetVideoSearch spreads

"Recommended Extension".

GetVideoSearch is advertised by file-hosting sites and video streaming sites. And its ads look like they’re made to confuse people.

basically, GetVideoSearch is advertised by fake download links and deceptive installation offers. These offers appear as pop-ups in new browser tabs when you try to download a file or watch a video on a website. GetVideoSearch’s ads fit in with the sites that advertise it, which leads some people to assume that GetVideoSearch is mandatory or required.

Therefore, many of GetVideoSearch’s installations are accidental.

This is unsurprising. GetVideoSearch offers no useful features or content. There’s no reason to install it if you know what it does. The only way for it to get any users is to trick them.

GetVideoSearch is part of a family of hijackers, together with OnlineSportsSearch, OnlineStreamSearch, and dozens of others. These hijackers have been around for months. They all use the same installation method and they advertise on the same sites. Watch out – avoid them and other pop-up ads. Consider using an ad blocker on those sites that are the most aggressive with their advertisements.
