GifsGalore is considered to be a browser hijacker. It promises to help you see, make, and share gifs, but it’s not really made for that; it’s made for advertising the MyWay.com search engine. Unsurprisingly, many antivirus apps detect GifsGalore as malicious. You may not even have installed GifsGalore on your own, so removing it should be a no-brainer.

How GifsGalore gets installed
GifsGalore is a browser add-on, so it gets installed on your browser. It gets to affect your web browsing, which is pretty significant, and it gets to remove your
GifsGalore often doesn’t ask to get installed – it just does. It’s actually pretty likely that a lot of the people who have it on their computer don’t even know it. Especially if they have multiple browser hijackers and new tab extensions because those just override each other. Even then, GifsGalore is still not good to keep.
First, GifsGalore can spread with adware bundles. If you downloaded and installed a free program before GifsGalore showed up, do you remember the setup process? Did it show you optional offers? Did it ask you to try out a new search engine or a new browser tab? Maybe it did and you just didn’t see these disclaimers? Bundlers almost always install optional offers by default, which is pretty unfair to us, the users: if we miss just one checkmark, that could flood our computers with junkware.
Also, GifsGalore gets advertised by shady search engines, adware infections, random redirects, and notification spammers. Sites that let you pirate free streams often show really aggressive and dangerous ads. Adware infections fill your browser with shady stuff, as well: floating ads, weird search results with links to alternative search sites, and notification pop-ups from unwanted sites. Browser hijackers like GifsGalore are some of the least harmful things being advertised this way.
Or you could find GifsGalore on your own, read its description, and become interested. Why not liven up your new tab page with some funny gifs?
But there are some red flags that should warn you that GifsGalore should be avoided:
- On Chrome, GifsGalore has over thirty thousand users – and no reviews or ratings. That’s not normal.
- If you look up GifsGalore’s developers, MindsparkInteractive Network, you can find articles about it making adware applications. Even Mindsaprk’s Wikipedia article mentions its browser hijacking business.
- Modern browsers use the permission system to help users know what an extension will be able to do once installed. And GifsGalore uses permissions it should not need. Besides replacing your new tab page, it also reads your browsing history, reads what you do on its websites (like what ads you click on and what you search for), and can manage your other extensions. This is pretty shady.
Is GifsGalore worth using?
What about GifsGalore’s functionality? Does it make up for GifsGalore’s flaws?
GifsGalore promised you access to a free gif creator, but all it does is link to Giphy. It creates a button that opens Giphy and then puts that on its new tab page. Giphy is completely independent from GifsGalore and can be used on its own – without hijacking your new tab page.
Another problem is that GifsGalore takes over your new tab page when it could be just an extension pop-up. Extension pop-ups are way more convenient for most extensions. But then, GifsGalore couldn’t take over your new tab page and link to Myway.com. If you don’t use Myway.com, it can’t advertise to you or collect your search queries.
If you like Giphy, you can favorite it (the keyboard shortcut is Ctrl+D or Cmd+D) and put a link to it on your new tab page. Most normal new tab extensions and modern browsers let you add custom links, customize your search engine, and even the background picture. GifsGalore can’t do any of that.
How to remove GifsGalore
As GifsGalore is a browser extension, different browsers have slightly different methods fo removing it. In the next section, there are instructions for each of them. Or you could let an antivirus program remove all the suspicious new tabs.
But it’s also very important to check your computer for other malware besides GifsGalore. That includes other suspicious browser extensions and potentially unwanted programs on your device. I suggest you scan your computer with an anti-malware program – for example, Combo Cleaner for Mac OS, SpyHunter for Windows, Malwarebytes, and others.
