What is GlobalMovieSearch?
Browser hijacker
Certainly, it has nothing to do with movies, despite its name.
GlobalMovieSearch is a browser add-on that changes the default search engine setting in your browser. The only visible effect of this is the text “Search GlobalMovieSearch” appearing in your address bar.
If you used to use Google.com as your default search engine, then your home page may have changed its appearance, too.
When you search the web from your address bar while GlobalMovieSearch is installed, that’s another big change: GlobalMovieSearch takes you to Yahoo! This is another Yahoo redirect virus.
Meanwhile, in the background, GlobalMovieSearch is collecting user data:
- What you search for.
- When you search.
- Which results and ads you click on.
- How much you interact with advertisements.
- What websites you go on.
This is all in Globalmoviesearch.com’s privacy policy.
Trojan
Who would install such an unhelpful browser extension? I mean, GlobalMovieSearch truly has no useful features. It just restricts your web search settings and logs your browsing habits.
Well, GlobalMovieSearch lies to people. It spreads through adverts online with the help of various pop-ups that look like installation links, download buttons, and required apps. GlobalMovieSearch’s ads basically say “you must install this” and hope that some people will believe it.
And some do – because the ads that GlobalMovieSearch displays do look convincing. They look like they’re one with the site that is advertising them. If you’ve heard of native advertising, GlobalMovieSearch’s ads are that, but for malware.
If you are curious why websites allow such predatory ads, well, the kinds of sites that advertise GlobalMovieSearch – pirating sites, file download sites, monetized URL shorteners – don’t really care about having a good reputation or protecting their users. And if the ads are effective, the sites that display them get paid. Thus, fake download links and similar ads are lucrative.
GlobalMovieSearch is very similar to Tinychill.com, Boostersearch.com, Getvideosearch.com, Streambrossearch.com, and other sites. They all use the same fake ads to spread. This search hijacking operation is distributed over dozens of different sites and extensions, which makes it difficult to see the real scale of it. But the volume of “my search was taken over by Yahoo” complaints online indicates that it is big.

Block unwanted ads
GlobalMovieSearch uses notifications to deliver advertisements. This can be fixed by changing browser settings:
- Chrome – open Settings, scroll down to Site settings (under Privacy and security), click on Notifications.
- Edge (Chromium) – open Settings, click Site Permissions, Notifications.
- Firefox – open Settings, Privacy & Security, scroll down to Permissions, and click on Settings next to Notifications.
- Safari – in the Safari menu, choose Preferences, Websites, Notifications.
This is reversible, so don’t worry about making any mistakes.
Also, this only blocks site notifications and not sites themselves. If you want to block malicious websites, use an anti-malware program that has a web shield or a reputable ad blocker.
Remove malware
Use antivirus programs to find and remove not just GlobalMovieSearch, but also other malicious programs and browser extensions. Use Spyhunter for Windows, Combo Cleaner for macOS, and other apps.
If GlobalMovieSearch can’t be removed, if you’re browser is “controlled by an administrator”, check our post on deleting extensions that abuse the Enterprise policy.
If there are no other threats on your computer, then it is enough to remove GlobalMovieSearch manually by uninstalling it like any other browser extension.
However, if there is any suspicious behavior on your device, like excessive ads or suspicious slowdowns, it is recommended to scan it with an antivirus tool just in case there’s an unwelcome guest hidden somewhere.
