What is Gotrovi.com?
Gotrovi.com is a Conduit-like or Qxsearch-like search engine that redirects search queries to Bing.com. It appears unexpectedly – people don’t install it on purpose.
It’s just a website. It has no identity, branding, not even privacy policy or terms of service. It’s meant to be invisible. The less noticeable it is, the more likely that people will leave it alone and let it continue fleecing off of them.
Problems caused by Gotrovi.com
You may notice Gotrovi.com or Grilime.com in your address bar. Just briefly, before another site (often Bing.com) is loaded. This could happen consistently every time you search from your address bar. Or it could happen only every other search.
You may get more ads with your search results. Your browser may load unexpected sites.
Gotrovi.com does two things:
- It tracks user data.
- It controls which sites open when the user searches the internet.
Hijacker and spyware
Gotrovi.com takes in your search queries and then sends them off to another site, such as Bing.com. The displayed search results are not by Gotrovi.com, as it can’t search the web.
What Gotrovi.com does is collect data about its users:
- Their device information.
- Their location and language.
- Search history and browsing history.
- Actions on the search results page.
This data is very useful for advertisers who want to know what people search for, but can’t because encryption is used by most major websites and it hides that sort of information from outsiders (What is HTTPS?). Gotrovi.com can insert itself between a user and the web, reading what they search for and compiling a profile for advertisers.
It’s worth noting that Gotrovi.com is associated with the Grilime.com site, which used to be an advertising site. It was a monetization tool for websites, browser extensions, and desktop apps. It used to host various ads. Now, it promotes Gotrovi.com.
Installed with a browser extension
Gotrovi.com comes with a browser add-on that, once installed, changes the settings of a browser in a way that allows Gotrovi.com to subtly take control over the victim’s web search. This extension could be anything. It could even be an older add-on that you’ve had installed for a while.
Extensions are powerful. They can open and close tabs in your browser. They can read your data. They can add and remove content in your webpages.
Many browser extensions only use their access for good – to deliver their features. But when an add-on becomes popular enough, its author may want to make some money from it.
One way to do that is to hijack the user’s search settings or to replace every search tab with an affiliate tab. The extension continues to deliver its features, but now it’s also making money.
This is how Gotrovi.com spreads and this is also why it’s so important to only install extensions that you trust.
How to remove Gotrovi.com
You need to find the offending extension and remove it.
You can use anti-malware tools, such as Combo Cleaner for macOS, Spyhunter for Windows, and others. But they don’t always detect threats as mild as Gotrovi.com. You might need to find it manually.
Disable all of your browser add-ons one-by-one and keep checking your search. When Gotrovi.com stops showing up, you must have found the extension. Remove it (you may need to disable syncing for extensions in your profile settings) and look for a safer and more reliable alternative.
Also, it’s advisable to remove or disable all the add-ons that you don’t use regularly. Even those extensions that don’t replace your search engine with Gotrovi.com may be doing something shady, like collecting and selling your browsing history.
After getting rid of the Gotrovi.com hijacker, go into your search engine and new tab page settings. Check if everything is how you like it. If needed, change those settings.
