Ads by Haccessmyemail.co
Haccessmyemail.co, or Haccessmyemail.co, is a website that hosts a new tab page. This page gets shown on the screens of those who install Access My Email Tab, a browser extension. Browser extensions are add-ons that are supposed to add to and improve web browsers. A lot of browser extensions are immensely helpful, doing things like adding night mode to websites, blocking ads, and making it easy to download videos. Even more extensions are useless or even harmful. Access My Email Tab is close to the latter.
Haccessmyemail.co is supposed to help you access your email but all it does is include a link to Emailhelper.org, which is mostly made up of ads next to links to Outlook, Gmail, and Yahoo Mail login pages. You could save your email’s login link in a bookmark (click Ctrl+D on Windows or Cmd+D on macOS while on the site) and your browser will make it quickly accessible. Haccessmyemail.co is more cumbersome than a single bookmark.
Once installed, Access My Email Tab does a few things:
- Replace the new tab page – one that promotes a few clickbait ad-filled sites.
- Log the user’s browsing data, including search queries and clicked links.
- Offer a web search field on Haccessmyemail.co that sends search queries to Yahoo.com.
Haccessmyemail.co tries to influence the web browsing activity of the person whose browser it hijacked.
For example, Haccessmyemail.co has that internet search field that opens search results in Yahoo.com. Except, the results have additional ads when delivered through Haccessmyemail.co. From my experience, Haccessmyemail.co adds one additional ad to the results page.
Another small issue is that those sites that Haccessmyemail.co features so prominently (Totalvideos.tv, Nationalweatheragency.org, and Myemailcentral.com) are absolutely full of clickbait. Most of their space is taken up by clickbait, a lot of which leads to actual dangerous scams. Oh, and those ad-filled sites belong to the same company that made Haccessmyemail.co – Eightpoint Technologies.
Eightpoint has also made Hide My History, Directions and Maps Now, Fast Search Assist, and a lot of other browser extensions. Some of them replace the new tab, just like Access My Email Tab does. Others replace the default search engine, which is the site that delivers your internet search results. Often, they advertise each other or get installed together.
How to remove Haccessmyemail.co
Haccessmyemail.co will be removed from the new tab page when the extension Access My Email Tab is uninstalled. It is possible that other browser extensions with similar unwanted effects are also installed on the same browser – after all, they use the same methods to spread. Instructions for how to remove a browser extension are posted below, but it can be as simple as finding the extension icon, right-clicking on it, and choosing the “Remove” option.
Scan your device with an antivirus program, like Combo Cleaner for macOS, Spyhunter for Windows, or another application that you’re comfortable using (don’t download apps that you don’t trust!). Bad browser extensions and similar programs are detected as PUPs (potentially unwanted programs), Adware, and under a bunch of other names.
Haccessmyemail.co asks to be able to send notifications to your browser. This means that it can show pop-ups on your screen regardless of what site you’re on. To revoke this permission, you need to find Haccessmyemail.co on your list of allowed URLs, click the button next to it, and choose to block it. Here’s how to open your notifications settings:
- Chrome – type “chrome://settings/content/notifications” in the address box.
- Safari – in the Safari menu, choose Preferences, Websites, Notifications.
- New Edge – type “edge://settings/content/notifications” in the address box.
- Firefox – open Settings, Preferences, Privacy & Security, scroll down to Permissions and click on Settings next to Notifications.
How to avoid malicious browser extensions
When so many browser extensions are just hijackers, it is important to be very careful when installing one:
- When you’re installing a browser extension, you should be presented with a list of permissions. Examine it and consider if they’re justified and how risky they are.
- Keep a good antivirus program on your computer. Configure your programs to automatically download and install updates.
- Be careful about what sites you visit. Avoid websites that show aggressive ads, open advertisements in new tabs of your browser, and trigger ads when you don’t even click on any. Sites that behave this way often also promote dangerous content.
Haccessmyemail.co may come bundled with an installer downloaded off of a shady website that offers various programs for free. It could be advertised by alternative search engines. It might also be offered by another browser hijacker. However it is installed, it’s very possible that it slipped past the computer user’s notice.
Every step taken to secure your computer reduces the risk of deceptive ads and programs attacking you. No security is perfect, but the harder you make it for scammers, malicious actors, and ultra-aggressive marketers to reach you, the safer you will be.
