About Hfreetestnow.app
Is it useful?
If Hfreetestnow.app appears in your browser, it must have replaced your new tab and your home page. It comes with a browser extension called Free Test Now which can be installed on Ffreetestnow.app. Free Test Now is supposed to provide its users with links to internet speed tests, some popular sites, and “convenient” web search by Yahoo.
- Yahoo search is pushed all the time by browser hijackers. It is super common. While Yahoo is a functional and safe search engine, it’s not okay for Free Test Now to force it on your browser. Your search engine should be your choice. Besides, search engine choice has nothing to do with internet speed testing.
- The links to popular sites that Free Test Now talks about are best avoided. They can be found on Hfreetestnow.app, right below the search box. They are all sites like Mynewswire and Thenewscorner, absolutely full of potentially dangerous clickbait. There’s barely any content in those sites. Or rather, the advertisements are the content. Get-rich-quick schemes, shady diet pills, disreputable betting sites- the kinds of ads that get banned from normal sites.
- Finally, does Hfreetestnow.app help you test your internet speed? Kind of. It opens an OpenSpeedTest page. OpenSpeedTest is already free to use and even offers its own browser extension that does not hijack your browser.
Hfreetestnow.app is made by Eightpoint Technologies, the same company that owns those ad-filled sites that Hfreetestnow.app promotes. It has also developed Easy Template Finder, My Learning Buddy, and many other hijackers that also promote those sites.
Free Test Now opens a new tab for the speed test, too. It’s like the creators of Free Test Now haven’t checked in on all the design innovations that new browser extensions have adopted, such as containing the features in the extension pop-up. But if Free Test Now didn’t hijack your new tab page, then it couldn’t promote the adware and mess with your searches.
Installation
Hfreetestnow.app promotes adware and Yahoo search every time you open a new tab in your browser. But that’s not all.
If you install Free Test Now online, then immediately after, offers for My Search Finder and Hide My History are opened in a new browser tab. These are search hijackers, while Free Test Now is a new tab hijacker. Search hijackers take over your default search engine settings and thus change how your address box/omnibar behaves. New tab hijackers replace your home page and new tab with a site like Hfreetestnow.app. These two types of browser hijackers complement each other perfectly.
Especially when those search hijackers and Hfreetestnow.app are made by the same company.
If you did not install Free Test Now yourself, then it might have come bundled with the installer of some program that you downloaded recently. Adware installers are uploaded online disguised as other programs or included with various freeware. It is entirely possible to install them by accident while trying to download another program.
How to remove Hfreetestnow.app
If Freetestnow.app or other sites are showing pop-up ads on your screen, know that it’s pretty easy to stop that. Just go to your browser settings and check the list of sites that are allowed to send notifications to your browser.
- Open notification settings:
- Chrome – type “chrome://settings/content/notifications” in the address box.
- Safari – in the Safari menu, choose Preferences, Websites, Notifications.
- New Edge – type “edge://settings/content/notifications” in the address box.
- Firefox – open Settings, Preferences, Privacy & Security, scroll down to Permissions, and click on Settings next to Notifications.
- Find Hfreetestnow.app and other unwanted sites. Press the button next to each address. In the pop-up menu, choose “Block”.
This blocks the site from sending more notifications, but not the site itself.
Uninstall Free Test Now and other browser extensions that are suspicious. If you’re unsure about an extension, disable it and then check how your browser behaves. And don’t spare any extension from your scrutiny: safe extensions get transformed into adware all the time. Extension monetization isn’t inherently wrong but it can be unethical. Keep removing extensions until your browser is free from hijackers.
Scan your computer for malicious items with an antivirus program, like Combo Cleaner for Mac, Spyhunter for PC, and others. If you get a warning about some program or file, consider removing it. Think about getting an ad-blocker or, even better, a malware scanner to block malicious websites for you. That would help you avoid malware infections and deceptive content online.
