Historyhide.com is yet another misleading site, History Hide – a web browser extension that uses people’s anxieties about online privacy to breach their online privacy. History Hide replaces your search engine and makes money off of the ads shown to you, but it’s doubtful if it provides any benefit to your privacy. Not to mention, History Hide often gets installed with other browser hijackers in such a way that people can easily agree to install it by accident.

What is Historyhide.com
Historyhide.com is a search engine site – a website that searches the internet and returns relevant results. Its selling point is helping you secure your privacy on the internet by encrypting your search queries (something that most sites already do – any site that uses encryption to protect your data gets a little padlock icon displayed next to its address in your web browser) and by not tracking your personal information associated with your search history.
Historyhide.com has an associated browser extension called History Hide (full name is “History Hide – A Hidden Searches Engine”). Once installed, History Hide forces the browser to open Historyhide.com to search the internet. Even if you try to use another website, like Google.com, History Hide will redirect you away. Luckily, it allows you to change that setting.
Besides redirecting you, History Hide also offers to prevent tracking throughout the internet by doing various things that Incognito and private modes in browsers already do. Not to mention, History Hide gets access to your data on all the websites that you visit, which means that you have to trust this extension to not peek at your usernames, passwords, email addresses, and other private data. Considering that History Hide is developed by Eightpoint Technologies, I’m not sure that you should have that trust. Eightpoint is related to Spigot, Mindspark, Polarity, and other companies that churn out hundreds of browser hijackers, including Hide My History, Local Classified Ads, Your Online Speed Test, and others. Just because Historyhide.com is presented as a privacy search engine, I’m not convinced that it’s any better.
Overall, the Historyhide.com search engine and the History Hide browser extension are totally unnecessary, very redundant, and mostly unhelpful. You can just use private/Incognito modes.
How History Hide spreads
If Historyhide.com just appeared in your browser unexpectedly, if your search queries keep being redirected to it, no doubt that the History Hide extension was installed in your browser. It might have happened in a few ways:
- You could have downloaded a freeware bundle – an installer for a free program that also installs a bunch of additional, unwanted programs in the background.
- You might have got an email ad for History Hide or another browser extension.
- History Hide gets recommended by fake service websites that only exist to spread browser hijackers.
I think the last option is the most common. Fake service sites that let you type in a query and then demand that you install a browser extension to see the results. These sites are used to start a chain of browser hijacker installations and push a bunch of unwanted apps which then hijack your web browser. History Hide is only one of many extensions pushed this way. So, I advise that you check your computer and especially your web browser for other unwanted apps and extensions.
Historyhide.com uses the word “Continue” as the main button to agree to install History Hide, which is a pretty common tactic used to trick people to install stuff without realizing it. Google Chrome’s developers call it out as being potentially deceptive because it can cause people to install extensions accidentally.
How to remove Historyhide.com
You can use an antivirus program (like Spyhunter for PC, Combo Cleaner for Mac) to find potentially unwanted programs on your computer, or you can manually check them yourself. Open your browser, find the extensions, and review them. Get rid of all the extensions that you don’t trust. Remember to check their permissions.
You don’t have to remove History Hide if you like it, but be aware of its issues and its origins.
