How to remove Hlogincenter.co
Get rid of Login Center Tab
If Hlogincenter.co has taken over your browser’s start page then you must be eager to get rid of it. As Login Center Tab doesn’t really provide any useful features, just a bunch of promoted links and a search box that leads to Yahoo. It’s just adware.
To remove Hlogincenter.co from your new tab, you just need to uninstall Login Center Tab. Normally, there should be an icon in the upper right corner of your web browser’s window in the shape of a puzzle piece – where the entries of Login Center Tab and other installed extensions are. You can click on their three-dot menus to get an option to remove them.
Alternatively, you can remove extensions by going into your browser settings as described at the bottom of this page.
For anything more serious, like finding other browser hijackers, checking your computer for adware, and dealing with extensions that reinstall themselves, it’s recommended to use an anti-malware program, such as Combo Cleaner for macOS, Spyhunter for Windows, and others. These programs can detect suspicious and low-reputation files and programs, such as bundlers that carry browser hijackers like Hlogincenter.co.
Stop unwanted pop-up ads
If you see pop-up ads on your screen that are labeled as coming from Hlogincenter.co or from any other site, stopping them is a little different. You need to block Hlogincenter.co from sending notifications. This can be done in browser settings.
There’s a section in browser settings where website addresses are listed – one list of sites that you’ve blocked from sending notifications and another list of sites that you’ve allowed.
- Here’s how to find your notification settings:
- Chrome – type “chrome://settings/content/notifications” in the address box.
- Safari – in the Safari menu, choose Preferences, Websites, Notifications.
- Edge (Chromium) – type “edge://settings/content/notifications” in the address box.
- Firefox – open Settings, Preferences, Privacy & Security, scroll down to Permissions, and click on Settings next to Notifications.
- Scroll until you see a list of sites that are allowed to send notifications.
- Next to each unwanted address, press the button that opens a menu and click “Block”.
Pop-up ads from Hlogincenter.co should stop after this. You might need to dismiss the ones that have already arrived, though.
Is Hlogincenter.co dangerous?
New tab clickbait
Hlogincenter.co is a kind of browser hijacker: a new tab replacer. It changes the start page in the browser and decorates it with its own links and ads. Its operators make money from that.
For example, imagine Hlogincenter.co just hijacked the browser of someone who was using the Chrome browser with the default new tab page – the one with a big “Google” in the middle and with a menu for Google apps in the upper right corner. Let’s say that person uses Gmail as their main email provider. What do they do when Hlogincenter.co takes over their browser and they want to check their email?
One of the links featured on Hlogincenter.co is under an icon that looks a whole lot like the Gmail icon. I thought that’s what it was, at first. It even has a little exclamation mark as if to note that there’s a new email in the inbox.
But actually, that’s a link to Myemailcentral.com – a clickbait-filled site that, like Hlogincenter.co, would like to send notifications to your browser. It has a few articles about how to use email and such, but they’re buried among excessive native ads (ads that look like links to articles). As is normal for clickbait, many of those ads are risky, promoting get-rich-quick schemes and diet pills.
Unsurprisingly, Myemailcentral.com belongs to the same company that made Hlogincenter.co – Eightpoint Technologies.
Eightpoint owns the other sites that Hlogincenter.co features, including the weather, map, news, video links, and the other email site – Emailhelper.org. All of them full of native ads, too.
Privacy
Another potential problem is the data that Hlogincenter.co logs. According to its privacy policy, Hlogincenter.co may log your hardware settings, your language, location, what browser extensions were installed before Login Center Tab, and a few other things. The sites that Hlogincenter.co links to have very similar privacy policies but they also include search queries among the data being logged.
This data may be shared with Eightpoint’s parent company Genimous and sister companies Polarity, Spigot (both marketing companies just like Eightpoint), and maybe some other companies that I don’t know about.
Shady installation
Based on my experience with Eightpoint extensions, there’s no way that anyone installed Login Center Tab intentionally. And yet, over eight thousand browsers have Hlogincenter.co attached to them. How did that happen?
I have a few guesses:
- Ads for Login Center Tabs might appear in the search results of sites like Search-7.com, Info.com, Mybrowser-search.com, and others for completely unrelated queries. These ads use “Download”, “Install”, and other misleading headings. People think they’re clicking on them to install what they searched for – but they get Hlogincenter.co instead.
- Recommendations and pop-ups by other browser hijackers.
- Optional offers presented by free software installers. These offers can be easy to miss because the installers opt you in automatically – manipulative and deceptive design is used.
Overall, there are plenty of ways for Hlogincenter.co to spread without anyone seeking it out. Worse, it indicates that there are more browser hijackers or adware viruses on the same computer.
