Hmylearningbuddy.co comes together with other hijackers, so there being multiple hijackers on your browser is a real concern. Scan your computer with Spyhunter for Windows, Combo Cleaner for macOS, or another antivirus program. They can detect malware, adware, and potentially unwanted programs.
Go into browser settings and check what your new tab is. Make sure that the default search engine is what you want it to be. You can find the instructions below. Check out this post on blocking notifications. Hmylearningbuddy.co and Mylearningbuddy.co offer to send notifications to your browser which appear as little pop-ups in the corner of your screen. If you want to stop them, you can disable them in browser settings as described in the linked post.
How Hmylearningbuddy.co works
My Learning Buddy is a browser extension. It should add functionality and offer some useful features relating to learning and skill building. Instead, My Learning Buddy restricts what you can do on your browser by hijacking your default new tab with Hmylearningbuddy.co.
Hmylearningbuddy.co is made by Eightpoint Technologies. This company makes a lot of browser extensions that share a few features:
- Once installed, they either replace the browser’s new tab page or the default search engine.
- If they replace the new tab page, they prominently feature a search box for searching the internet. It always leads to Search.yahoo.com.
- They often promote each other and get installed in groups.
- They always ask for access to browsing history.
- They are presented as offering various utilities and practical additions to the browser. However, the vast majority of the extensions deliver their functions by opening unrelated websites that are available regardless of the extension being installed.
Eightpoint’s extensions often just put a few relevant links in menus at the top of the new tab replacement page. You know what else can do that? Bookmarks and website favorites. You can add shortcuts and pin links to websites in your new tab on your own (Makeuseof.com). Except for when Hmylearningbuddy.co replaces the new tab and then you lose access to your customized new tab page.
Hmylearningbuddy.co is the browser extension equivalent of a clickbait listicle: there is some real (though unoriginal) content there, but the real and maybe the only reason for its existence is to display ads. Hmylearningbuddy.co does this by prominently featuring links to clickbait sites like Nationalweatheragency.org, Totalvideos.tv, and others – owned by Eightpoint, unsurprisingly.
How to avoid hijackers
Hmylearningbuddy.co comes with the My Learning Buddy extension. It’s very possible that people who get it didn’t mean to install it.
Deceptive and misleading ads could be at fault – Mylearningbuddy.co uses the template of a card with a big bright “CONTINUE” button to trick people to begin My Learning Buddy’s installation.
Bundling is another suspect – it’s when an installer for a program offers a bunch of additional software, usually with the help of deceptive user interface.
After being installed, My Learning Buddy immediately closes the installation site and opens pages that offer My Search Finder and Hide My History – two search hijackers that are also made by Eightpoint.
If you have adware on your computer, that’s likely to cause more adware and potentially unwanted programs to be installed on your device. If you download programs from unreliable websites and use wrapper installers, they might try to sneak unwanted software on your device. It’s not your fault that dishonest advertisers are tricking people. But you can avoid a lot of junkware by just being extremely careful about what you install. Be patient and slow while installing new programs, think before clicking each button. It also helps to use ad-blockers and web security features included in anti-malware programs.
