What is Hmyofficetools.co
My Office Tools, or Hmyofficetools.co, is a browser app (extension) that takes over browsers and turns them into advertising platforms.
Here’s a short overview of what you get with Hmyofficetools.co:
- Hmyofficetools.co replaces the new tab page. So, whenever you open an empty new tab in your browser, Hmyofficetools.co shows up.
- It features a search box in the middle that leads to Yahoo.com. I don’t see a way to change that, so Yahoo is probably the only site that Hmyofficetools.co wants you to use when searching the internet.
- Five links featured prominently on Hmyofficetools.co are related clickbait sites. They’re real clickbait – their content is the ads that they display.
- Four links on Hmyofficetools.co lead to online document editors (Dropbox, Zoho, Google, Microsoft 365). Some of them are paid and all require registration.
- Two more links are probably ads for Amazon and Kohls.
- A few random links to online utilities – one to Adobe Flash Player, one to a guide on how to use the Snipping tool, and links to a few video call tools.
This is pretty random. Hmyofficetools.co’s functionality consists of links to other sites. You can achieve the exact same effect with browser bookmarks. Except that bookmarks do not restrict your search engine or take over your home page while all being under your control, free to add to, change, or remove.
Hmyofficetools.co, on the other hand, interferes with searches, reads browser history, reads user data, and its creator Eightpoint Technologies is known for crunching out browser hijackers and being related to other adware companies, such as Spigot and Polarity.
In the end, Hmyofficetools.co is not meant to be practical or comfortable to use. There’s just no way. It does seem to function well as an adware product. Whether it was intended to be adware or not, that’s what it is.
How to remove Hmyofficetools.co
Check your computer for malware. Adware apps like Hmyofficetools.co don’t just randomly pop up in computers. Sometimes they’re advertised online but other times they come bundled in installers of other free apps. Rarely do they come alone. Hmyofficetools.co is a new tab hijacker but Eightpoint has released a lot of search hijackers, too, such as My Search Assistance, Search Tab, and History Hide. And I am used to seeing new tabs paired with a search hijacker or two.
You can check your programs manually. One good way to hunt for malware is to check what programs were installed at or around the date that malware showed up.
Windows 10 users should press the Windows key, then the Settings gear, Apps, Apps & features. Then sort by install date.
Windows 7 users should open the Control Panel, click Programs and features, and click on the Installed On column.
MacOS users can open Finder, Applications, and right-click the top row to make sure that the Date Added column is visible, then click on it to sort the apps.
A better way to find malware and potentially unwanted apps is to scan your device with an anti-malware application, such as Combo Cleaner for macOS, Spyhunter for Windows, and others.
As for notification pop-ups, those can be disabled in browser settings, as described in this post – How to disable web push notifications. There’s an abundance of sites that, like Myofficetools.co and Hmyofficetools.co, abuse notifications for ads. That’s why web browsers restrict the pop-ups that are required to get your permission. Still, sites come up with new ways to get you permission for notifications, so be vigilant.
