Instant Inbox is a browser extension that promises to help people effectively access their email accounts from their new tab page, but it goes on to replace your search engine and read your browsing history. Instant Inbox is a bit useless — only adds a few links on the new tab page, plus a search box that links to a search engine known for its abundant ads.

As far as I know, Instant Inbox, which has the address www.instantinbox.co, is not associated with the company using instantinbox.co.uk.
What does Instant Inbox do?
Instant Inbox changes the new tab page of your browser, and it’s not a bad looking page. It’s minimalistic and has links to four popular email providers, as well as a couple of popular social networks. The people who use those specific websites might find this somewhat useful. Instant Inbox also happens to be able to read your browsing history, manage your downloads, and collect your data.
The description of this extension mentions “custom web search”. I’m not sure what that means, but, in the middle of the page, there is a search bar for browsing the web. It does not use your default search engine, though. Instead, it directs queries to the Yahoo! engine, known for displaying quite a few ads in the results. This engine is pushed by many, many browser hijackers, possibly because of Oath’s partnership program.
Overall, Instant Inbox is very similar to Quick Email Access and Email Inbox Login: they link to an unwanted search engine, they track people’s search data, and they justify this with providing a few links on the new tab page.
Why is Instant Inbox unwanted?
Instant Inbox offers very few flimsy features in exchange for the use that they get out of you. You get a couple of quick links on your new tab page — they get your browsing data and a lot of personal information. Data about people’s demographics, browsing preferences, financial situation is very valuable to advertisers. No wonder that behind Instant Inbox’s privacy policy is a marketing company (ITO Media) that helps their clients craft effective marketing strategies and find audiences for their products, and not some selfless developer.
If you use Instant Inbox, it can track your browsing history, location, device, as well as the information that it may import from the social networks that you decide to associate with Instant Inbox. You should be protective of your private data and only share your information with companies that you really trust; leaks happen often enough, sometimes the people whose data is exposed are not told about it. And, in an extreme scenario, if this data were to fall into criminal hands, it could be used for phishing attacks.
Additionally, poor quality extensions can be abused by malware, so you should only install software that you trust. Harm is not intended by these extensions, but having more add-ons does increase your risk. Something like modifying your new tab page is actually possible to do without any extensions and requires no special tools, go ahead and look into it.
How to remove Instant Inbox
Instant Inbox can be removed by accessing your browser settings — it’s really very simple, and the guides for the browsers that Instant Inbox affects are below.
Besides, sometimes Instant Inbox is installed together with other unwanted extensions, like Search Secure. People don’t only find Instant Inbox organically, but also by going there from adware websites like EasyToolOnline. These can be promoted by real adware viruses — dangerous because they also promote sites that spread malware or steal people’s login details. I regularly see adware sites advertise browser hijackers.
If you found Instant Inbox on your own, or through ads, then you should be fine. But if you had Instant Inbox recommended to you by a pop-up ad, or if it was installed without your knowledge, it’s likely that an adware virus is responsible. You can find out for sure by scanning your device with a professional antivirus tool, like Spyhunter.
