IntelliTerm is a browser add-on that offers to look content up on Bing or Wikipedia without leaving the page. It also admits to being supported by ads as a way to remain free. However, while it is normal for free commercial products to show ads, IntelliTerm is classified by some as adware for the excessive number of advertisements it displays.

Besides showing too many ads, IntelliTerm is also criticized for using bundling for promotion, for being difficult to remove from certain browsers, and for altering browser settings that it shouldn’t need. Similar to FlowSurf, QkSee, and other browser adware, IntelliTerm is often installed by people involuntarily, collects data about them for the benefit of advertisers, and is pushing potentially dangerous content in its ads, including other malware.
How IntelliTerm spreads
Bundling is used to install IntelliTerm below your notice. Wrapper installers that are used by some freeware sites to “help” people download and install programs often include promoted software — applications whose developers paid to be automatically installed or offered during the installation. IntelliTerm has spread that way to quite a few computers.
Bundling is not the only way that malicious extensions spread. Ads are used, too, which is why IntelliTerm has such a nice home page. Sometimes the ads are honest, oftentimes other adware networks are used to direct people to the installation sites.
It might be surprising that an extension which is considered by many to be malicious can be installed so freely. After all, browsers take various measures to filter out the malware and only accept honest and safe add-ons to the official stores. However, sometimes malware does slip through the review process, change their functionality later, or act in a way that’s, while predatory, is totally legal on paper. That’s why you should not trust apps, add-ons, and programs just because they have some seal of approval or are available on a safe site. Each program should be reviewed individually before you trust it.
Is IntelliTerm harmful?
Too many ads are bad for productivity and annoying. Especially inline ads. The types of advertisers that usually partner with adware creators tend to be malicious and dishonest — the products and companies that were rejected by mainstream ad-networks. The ads somewhat dangerous — they promote fake optimizers, scams, and dubious products that are normally restricted to protect the ad viewers. Don’t underestimate how dangerous a malicious webpage can be: phishing scams, tech support scams, fake lotteries, and unsafe medical products constantly lose people hundreds of dollars. Besides that, the “Ads by IntelliTerm” are incredibly obnoxious: new windows, tabs, banners, pop-ups, ads on top of the content that you’re trying to view, and ads hidden so that you don’t even know that they’re open.
IntelliTerm has access to your browser, including your browsing history. The same technology that enables this extension to inject ads into any website allows it to see what you type in any page. Your usernames and passwords are at the mercy of IntelliTerm’s developers — you can only trust them not to read your data.
Like other hijackers, IntelliTerm reaches some people in bundles and infected installers. While this does not make the extension malware, it does signal the possibility that more malicious or unwanted programs are installed on your computer. If you were downloading bundles regularly and not watching your installations like a hawk, there are likely a few stealthy applications hiding on your machine as well, so that’s worth being concerned about. As if that wasn’t enough, IntelliTerm can be difficult to remove because of persistence processes that it runs. No program should make it difficult for you to uninstall it — that wastes time and is malware-like behavior.
Stop Ads by IntelliTerm
If you like IntelliTerm, you can keep using it, but then the ads will remain as well. There is no way of separating the two components of this application. If IntelliTerm is removed form your browser, though, the ads will be gone. Removed, IntelliTerm won’t be able to access your browser and make changes or get data anymore.
Follow the guide below this article to manually remove IntelliTerm from your browser. It might be needed to remove malware from your machine before that. Perform a scan with Spyhunter (Windows), or Combo-Cleaner (Mac) to detect all the suspicious programs, such as ones that might have smuggled IntelliTerm onto your device. If an application is detected as potentially unwanted (PUP or PUA), then it’s safest to just uninstall it.
