InternetSpeedTracker - How to remove

InternetSpeedTracker is a browser extension that offers “free tips on how to boost connectivity”, as well as an internet speed test. This add-on is popular, with tens of thousands of users on Chrome. Despite that, InternetSpeedTracker is an extremely basic extension that does very little for its users. More than a utility, InternetSpeedTracker is an adware virus.

How useful InternetSpeedTracker is

InternetSpeedTracker is made by Mindspark – a company known well for releasing the same browser extension with slight changes dozens of times, for example, TestForSpeedInternet Speed Radar, DownSpeedTest, InternetSpeedUtility, etc. All these browser add-ons work not by giving you access to the test on any websites, but rather, only in the new tab. You may as well save your favorite speed test in your bookmarks.

Measuring your internet speed can be very useful for troubleshooting problems with slow internet and for planning your downloads. Having a speed test accessible quickly in your browser can be nice. However, to use InternetSpeedTracker you always need to open your new home page every time, so its functionality is very outdated and rudimentary. Not to mention all the additional browser hijacking that InternetSpeedTracker does – it’s used to spy on users and promote partner websites, like some sort of adware.

InternetSpeedTracker is not too dangerous, but be aware of its behavior before you decide to use it regularly:

How to get rid of InternetSpeedTracker

Though InternetSpeedTracker is free, the tracking of users’ browsing activity and search queries allows this add-on to be monetized. That means that you do have to pay a bit of a price for having this extension in your browser. This is worse if InternetSpeedTracker appeared in your browser unannounced, with a page like hp.myway.com/internetspeedtracker/ttab02/index.html already set as your new tab and no way to change that, since InternetSpeedTracker controls that setting. MyWay is InternetSpeedTracker’s search provider regardless of what you had set in your browser before – it’s owned by Mindspark, too.

At the end of the day, it’s not surprising that many reputable antivirus programs target InternetSpeedTracker as a potentially unwanted program – it’s adware and a browser hijacker.

How to remove InternetSpeedTracker

Uninstall InternetSpeedTracker

In mosts cases, InternetSpeedTracker can be removed normally, by going to your browser settings and disabling or removing all suspicious add-ons. The instructions for this are in the bottom section. If you’re having trouble with that, there might be a malicious application preventing browser settings from being changed, in which case, it would help to scan your computer with Combo Cleaner for Mac, SpyHunter for PC, or another trusted antivirus tool.

How InternetSpeedTracker spreads

It’s surprising, but it doesn’t look like people find InternetSpeedTracker by searching for a way to find out their internet speed. Rather, they discover it thanks to ads, redirects, and bundles with other software. The concerning thing is that not every user who has InternetSpeedTracker wanted to install this add-on. Deceptive installation tactics have often been employed by Mindspark.

The way that InternetSpeedTracker was installed could reveal how much trouble, if any, your computer is in. If the extension was promoted by a bundle, consider avoiding whatever website you downloaded it from or just being a lot more careful next time you use it. For example, scan every file you download before running it.

Adware bundles that use PPI (pay-per-install monetization) is one common way that hijackers like InternetSpeedTracker get installed. You might be installing a program that has nothing to do with internet speed tracking and this add-on might be offered during setup. Some people miss this offer entirely, others think it might be useful and don’t check info about InternetSpeedTracker online (or else it would become clear that this extension is a browser hijacker). This way, InternetSpeedTracker is disseminated by various PUPs (potentially unwanted programs).

Normal ads are also used to promote InternetSpeedTracker, especially in Japan. In most cases, if you install InternetSpeedTracker manually, you should also be able to remove it normally. It’s the add-ons that use malware to spread that can become annoyingly persistent.
