InternetSpeedUtility is a browser extension that gets installed in the browser. When it’s installed, it forces the browser to use InternetSpeedUtility.net for web searching. It’s great for the creators of this extension because they make money from showing ads in the search results, but not so great for the users who hardly get any useful features from this plugin. When your browser is infected with InternetSpeedUtility, it’s considered browser hijacking because the add-on takes over some important settings that do not matter to the extension’s functions or features. And this lands InternetSpeedUtility in some hot water with cybersecurity vendors who declare it potentially dangerous.
An important reason for this judgement of InternetSpeedUtility is that it uses aggressive and shady tactics to get installed on as many machines as possible. Adware viruses, deceptive ads, bundling – thanks to these, people find the extension installed and do not know where it came from. Well, know that you can safely remove it because it’s a normal browser hijacker. It’s not even the only Internet speed extension by Mindspark: there are also InternetSpeedRadar and DownSpeedTest which are both nearly identical to InternetSpeedUtility.
InternetSpeedUtility should be uninstalled in most cases:

What’s wrong with InternetSpeedUtility?
One of the most obvious problems with InternetSpeedUtility is that this add-on gets installed using deception, manipulation, misleading ads, bundling, or even malware. InternetSpeedUtility is a powerful extension that can extract a lot of information about you and your browsing habits from the browser, for example, it can see your search queries or which links you click on. It can also tell what other extensions you have. This is fine if you trust the developer of the add-on, but Mindspark? That company is known widely for spreading potentially unwanted programs, probably just to make money from advertising.
Advertising does seem to be the main purpose of InternetSpeedUtility. This add-on proposes to help you test your internet speed, but unlike other extensions with the same function that are as out-of-the-way as possible, InternetSpeedUtility is developed to take over your home page and includes a search bar there that opens MyWay for search results. On top of that, installing InternetSpeedUtility on Chrome means that you’ll be automatically offered to install the Ask extension in a very misleading way that makes it look like you’re continuing the InternetSpeedUtility installation. Ask is a more powerful browser hijacker and it is made by a sister company of Mindspark.
So, InternetSpeedUtility is a browser extension that’s developed for the purpose of forcing its users to search using the search engines owned by a particular company. Data about the user’s browsing habits is used for more effective advertising, the user’s consent is not considered to be important.
How to remove InternetSpeedUtility
The first thing to try when your browser is behaving strangely is to check its settings and the installed browser extensions. In the case of InternetSpeedUtility, removing the add-on manually is going to be enough for many of its victims. It’s still advisable to scan your computer with an anti-malware program due to how the add-on spreads, though.
Where a scan with a security program might be truly needed is in the cases of InternetSpeedUtility refusing to be removed. This happens with hijackers a lot – people remove the add-on, then it comes back a few days later. This means that malware has infected your computer and keeps reinstalling the extension. Scan your computer with SpyHunter for Windows, Combo Cleaner for Mac OS, or another reliable security tool. Remove the malicious programs, then try uninstalling InternetSpeedUtility again. The detailed instructions for each browser are below this article.
