JobSearch (Myjobsearchtab.com) is a browser extension that replaces the new tab page and has Bing.com deliver web search results. It’s not dangerous, but it looks and acts like a browser hijacker, changing settings in unhelpful ways and getting access to more data than it should need. It’s safer to avoid JobSearch or to remove it if it’s already on your browser.

How JobSearch works
JobSearch replaces the new tab page
I first stumbled on Myjobsearchtab.com while looking into MaxSearch, an old and no longer active hijacker. It took me to JobSearch, a browser extension by Ermoza – an ad tech company.
JobSearch is an extension for Chrome and Chromium browsers. Once installed, it replaces the new tab page with its own.
In its feature description on Myjobsearchtab.com and on the Chrome Web Store, JobSearch promises to help users with job hunting. It offers to help them access top job sites and to help people learn how to apply to jobs. Is it any good?
Not really. JobSearch’s new tab is a basic page with links to the top to three job classifieds websites, LinkedIn, a salary calculator, and an interviewing coach. The links are not customizable. So, six links to third-party websites is the extent of JobSearch’s functionality.
It lacks customization
I think that browser bookmarks are more functional and customizable than what JobSearch offers. Especially when you consider that the JobSearch new tab lacks link pinning, frequently visited websites, a custom background picture, color theme, and that it ignores search engine preferences that can be found in the settings.
JobSearch’s search box accepts web search queries and has Bing.com return the results. Bing.com is fine, but not everyone wants to use it. Especially through another site that may or may not respect your privacy (Browser Extensions Are a Privacy Nightmare).
The thing is, JobSearch doesn’t have to replace the new tab page. Its links could have easily fit in an extension pop-up that could appear when you click its icon in the upper right corner. It would be a lot less disruptive and get rid of the fluff (such as those links below the search box). But then if JobSearch worked as an extension pop-up, it couldn’t get access to people’s internet searches (and make money from them).
It is advertised online
JobSearch is advertised by the website Myjobsearchtab.com. It’s presented as a tool to help users find jobs and career advice and it features a big, bright, and ambiguous “Continue” button that so many hijackers employ in their advertisements. Such ads are potentially a little confusing and could lead to unintentional installations of the JobSearch extension, depending on how the ad is framed.
In general, ads like this appear on websites disguised, in web search results (especially on iffy sites like Zapmeta), and in notification spam. Luckily, JobSearch doesn’t seem to currently use any such methods.
In addition, browser hijackers often come bundled with free programs as optional offers. This can also lead to unwanted installation, so be careful when installing free software from download sites.
How to remove the JobSearch new tab
To get rid of the JobSearch new tab page, go into your browser settings and remove the JobSearch extension.
Then, check your settings for the new tab and default search engine. These are the settings that browser hijackers usually take over.
There are actually some malicious extensions that can take over browsers without visibly changing these settings. They can be tricky to find – anti-malware software can help here.
You might want to scan your computer with anti-malware software, such as Spyhunter for Mac, Combo Cleaner for macOS, Spyhunter for Windows, and others. These programs can help you discover malware and potentially unwanted programs that you might miss when searching manually.
