What is Keysearchs.com
Have you noticed the address “Keysearchs.com” flashing in your address bar? Maybe you managed to catch it in a screenshot before it quickly redirected to another site. If yes, then check your browser extensions because there might be some unwanted items installed there.
Keysearchs.com is a website that hijacks browsers through extensions. From what I can tell, these browser extensions redirect all your searches to Keysearchs.com. Here’s how they do it:
- they watch what you do online (they can read your browsing history),
- then, when you search for something on Google.com, Bing.com, or Yahoo.com, they start working,
- these extensions read your address and strip out the part that’s your search query, since that’s included in the address (for example, “google.com/search?q=blah” includes my query “blah”),
- then they create a new site address for Keysearchs.com, including your query (“blah”), which search engine you used (Google, Bing, etc.), and a unique user ID,
- the extension then opens this Keysearchs.com site and immediately closes your current browser tab,
- Keysearchs.com redirects to the site that it just closed.
This allows Keysearchs.com to log your search history and even control which sites open in your browser. In theory, Keysearchs.com could block or redirect some of your queries to its affiliate sites and make money from that. In my case, men’s health and diet sites were promoted by the extension.
Keysearchs.com is not the only site of this type. Quicknewtab.com, Searchmes.xyz, Tailsearch.com, and others do the same thing.
How Keysearchs.com infects browsers
To get Keysearchs.com on your browser, you must install the extension enforcing it. Even if you don’t remember installing the extension:
- it might have been bundled with (embedded in) a free program and installed with that free program,
- a deceptive ad might have convinced you that it’s another file or program.
Here’s an example of the kind of ad that is used to spread malicious extensions:
When this pop-up shows up on a file-download site, you can easily mistake it for a genuine download prompt – when in reality, it’s a link to install a junk extension.
Once Keysearchs.com is in your browser, it’s not obvious at all. Nothing looks different. So, it’s easy to not even notice that a bad extension was installed.
You can go check out your browser extensions right now. Click on their Details button to check them out. The ones responsible for Keysearchs.com redirects are likely to redirect you away. I guess they don’t want you looking at them too closely.
How to remove Keysearchs.com
As described in the section at the bottom, you can remove the browser extensions that look suspicious. You should also check that your search settings aren’t set to Keysearchs.com.
Scan your computer with an anti-malware program, like Spyhunter for Windows, Combo Cleaner for macOS, and others. This would help you check your device for other malicious and potentially unwanted programs and files.
Use ad-blockers and anti-malware programs with web filters to block bad sites. They can help you avoid malicious ads that lead to infections by sites like Keysearchs.com.
