What is LogarithmicRecord
Adware
There’s this app, LogarithmicRecord. It’s also a browser extension. Its icon is a blue/green disc with a white magnifying glass on it. When you read the LogarithmicRecord extension’s description, you find that it can read your information on all the webpages that you visit.
LogarithmicRecord is an adware app – its goal is to force your browser to open affiliated sites. Those sites make more money the more visitors they get, so malicious apps like LogarithmicRecord are used to buy more traffic. So, LogarithmicRecord makes sure that your internet searches are handled by sites like Safe Finder, Yahoo, or Search Baron/Marquis/Snow, or a subdomain of Akamaihd.net. As long as LogarithmicRecord is installed, it has control over your browser’s search settings.
Traffic hijacker
You should also check your Network settings. It’s possible that LogarithmicRecord configured a web proxy to be used. If it did, your traffic is directed to this server before going out to the internet.
Other effects
With LogarithmicRecord installed, you might notice these things:
- search redirects, new unwanted home pages, other changes in your internet browser,
- slower or unstable internet,
- more aggressive targeted ads,
- pop-ups that hijack your mouse cursor,
- crashing online apps.
The people who made LogarithmicRecord are probably only interested in making money by forcing you to click on ads and visit affiliated websites. This is bad for your privacy, it wastes your time, and it’s taking advantage of you. Oh, and LogarithmicRecord might be able to download more malware.
Once you delete LogarithmicRecord (and all the malware that might have come with it), it would be wise for you to set new passwords for your online accounts. Make sure to use two-factor authentication (2FA) wherever it’s possible. That way, even if LogarithmicRecord logged your passwords, nobody can use them to hack your accounts without your knowledge.
How LogarithmicRecord infects Macs
Some Mac enthusiasts will tell you that Macs can’t get infected with malware because there are no Mac viruses. That the only way to get software on a Mac is to install it yourself. That may be so – but LogarithmicRecord spreads by tricking people into believing that they’re installing a safe and desirable app on their Mac.
If you installed a Flash Player update or another software update after seeing a warning about it while browsing the internet, that might have been malware in disguise. There are so many malicious files called “Player.dmg”, “FlashPlayerInstaller.dmg”, “Installer.app”, and “Player.app”.
However LogarithmicRecord was installed, you likely didn’t know about it and thought that you were installing something else.
LogarithmicRecord and the malware that comes with it (Mac cleaners are common) add themselves to your login items so that they run every time you boot up your Mac.
If you try to delete the LogarithmicRecord app on its own, it might fail. As in, the adware might return under a different name, like SkilledOrigin, FieldIndexer, AdjustableView, OperativeDevice, etc.
How to remove LogarithmicRecord
Delete malicious files
Use an anti-malware app, such as Combo Cleaner, Malwarebytes, or another to scan your Mac for adware and for other malware. Then, delete the items that are found. You might need to start your Mac in safe mode for this.
Deleting LogarithmicRecord manually is much harder. LogarithmicRecord puts its files in the same folders as your legitimate apps put their files. And malicious files tend to have names that seem legit, so they’re just not obvious.
You can check out these folders:
- /Library/LaunchAgents
- ~/Library/LaunchAgents
- /Library/LaunchDaemons
- /Library/Application Support
- ~/Library/Application Support
- /Library/PrivilegedHelperTools
You can open them in Finder by pressing the Cmd+Shift+G button combination and then typing or pasting the folder names.
Keep in mind that if you delete legitimate files from these folders, the settings of your apps will get messed up or disappear.
Restore Mac settings
One of the most common spots to find malware on a Mac is in System Preferences -> Profiles. Go ahead and delete all the Profile items that are not familiar to you.
Next, go to System Preferences -> Network -> Advanced -> Proxies. I mentioned earlier that LogarithmicRecord might configure your Mac to use a proxy server.
And there are also browser settings to look at. If your antivirus scan removed the LogarithmicRecord extension, your search and home page settings might not have been changed still. You can fix them as posted below.
