Eightpoint is the company that developed Login Easier. It’s developed dozens, if not hundreds, of low-quality browser hijackers. Most of them look the same: a new tab page with a search bar and a toolbar at the top; the toolbar has a few links, the search bar uses not your default search engine, but one that Eightpoint wants you to use. Search.hconvert2pdfnow.com, Shipment Tracker, and Email Anytime, the last one being nearly identical to Login Easier.
How Login Easier hijacks the browser
The way that Login Easier is installed is problematic. Instead of helping you log in, the logineasier.com site has you pick your email provider and then asks you to install its extension. This tactic is used by a few different browser hijackers: “if you want to see your result, install our extension!”. It’s better to just leave the site — reputable websites do not do this type of thing.
Login Easier also bundles a couple of unwanted hijackers with it. One of them is SearchEncrypt. It takes over your address bar and will redirect you to its own page if it catches you trying to use another search engine. Between Login Easier and the bundled applications, your browser is truly hijacked.
Bundling is a promotional strategy that encourages people to install a product by including it with another program. It’s seen as unethical because it can force people to install programs that they don’t want or even don’t know about. If it has ever happened to you that, after installing a program, you noticed another random application also installed, you’ve been the victim of unwanted program bundling. Potentially unwanted software is a whole category for programs which are not viruses, but should probably not be installed; Login Easier could fit into this category, too.
Privacy and Login Easier
Privacy is a concern. If you use Login Easier, your browsing — what you search for, what you click on, what software. you are using — is being tracked. This information is used to improve behavioral advertising, showing you ads that are expected to be effective. The information is shared with advertisers, as described in the privacy policy of the Login Easier extension:
Advertisers and advertising networks place ads (including sponsored links in search results) on or through our Services. These companies may collect information, such as your computer’s IP address, browser information, and search queries, as you use our Services
And there are a lot of ads. As Login Easier forces people to use their promoted search engine, promoted links are injected into the results page. Thanks to that, the search results are not very accurate. Moreover, many of the websites that Login Easier links you to want to push notifications, which can result in annoying pop-ups.
How to remove Login Easier
This extension, as well as SearchEncrypt and whatever other applications were bundled, need to be removed in order to free your browser. This can be done in the settings of your browser. Below there are guides for different browsers.
The way that Login Easier distributed is problematic. The developers of these browser hijackers don’t just use normal ads to promote them, they also use adware. Adware is software that displays ads, usually by hijacking the web browser (for example, periodically opening new tabs to promoted sites).
If you have an adware virus, you need to know what type of virus it is. If it’s a program on your computer, a strong antivirus program is needed to find and remove it: Spyhunter are good examples. If it’s an adware site, it can usually be stopped by blocking notifications from it. If the adware is another extension, it can be removed by following the same guide below.
Whatever the virus is, adware tremendously increases people’s exposure to malicious ads and malware infections, so it must be removed.
