Problems with Macube Cleaner
Macube Cleaner is a cleaner app for Macs by the company FonePaw. It can be found on Macube.com and on software download sites like Macupdate.com. Macube Cleaner offers to delete duplicates, cache, old and large files, clear browser cache and history, shred files, etc. These features are supposed to “revive” your Mac and keep it in “new status”.
Despite all the nice features, Macube Cleaner is flagged by a few antivirus programs. Here’s a scan of the installer: Virustotal.com. The labels given to Macube Cleaner include Trojan, Malware, and PUP/PUA (potentially unwanted program). Plus, the deceptor watchdog AppEsteem considers Macube Cleaner to be a deceptor – an app that engages in behavior that is deceptive, risky, and potentially harmful.
Potentially unwanted programs are not necessarily malicious or dangerous. But they are also unhelpful. They’re more likely to waste your time and computer resources than help you. Other PUPs include iMyMac Cleaner, TuneupMyMac, MacFaster Pro, etc.
Mac optimizers like Macube Cleaner and the related Mac Master tend to make themselves look more useful than they are. They are paid, yet they duplicate features that you can access for free on your Mac.
Some of Macube Cleaner’s features are more marketing than substance.
- For instance, when Macube Cleaner offers to delete cache files, it can actually make your computer run slower. Cache is meant to speed up your programs.
- If Macube Cleaner is allowed to run all the time, it can unnecessarily scan and delete files, which can also make your computer run slower.
Free ways to optimize storage
Apple has a great article on how you can free up storage space on your Mac. It reminds users that macOS automatically deletes caches, logs, and other data when needed. It also helps to uninstall unneeded apps.
If you want to delete browser data, this is easy to do manually:
- Safari – browsing history, cookies and website data.
- Google Chrome – clear browsing data.
- Mozilla Firefox – browsing history, cookies and website data.
Despite what Macube Cleaner’s description implies, you don’t need to clean your computer or your data every day. Every few months is more realistic. Besides, your browsing history and site data don’t really affect your online privacy. Some cookies do, but Safari, Firefox, and even Google Chrome limit cookies and other tracking methods.
How to uninstall Macube Cleaner
It’s recommended to avoid Macube Cleaner and all other Mac cleaners and optimizers.
If you like Macube Cleaner, that’s fine. This is not malware and it won’t infect you with anything. Just be aware that there are free tools to do what Macube Cleaner offers and more.
If you have the app and would like to remove it, you can do that – just uninstall Macube Cleaner like you would any application. A simple way to do that is to go into the Applications folder and delete the Macube Cleaner app (instructions below).
You can use an anti-malware app (such as Spyhunter for Mac, Combo Cleaner, etc.) to check your Mac for other low-reputation and malicious apps and files, but this should not be necessary for deleting Macube Cleaner.
If you paid for the app and then decide to remove it, then cancel your subscription. The Macube.com website currently makes it difficult to find any information on refund and cancellation, so you might have to contact support for this.
