MediaGet is a torrent client that is labeled as malicious by many antivirus programs. As you can see on this Virustotal.com page, it is considered to be adware, malicious, and riskware. Some of these detections are for no good reason other than because MediaGet is a torrent downloader. But there are a few other reasons, too.
The MediaGet torrent client has a browser hijacker component. It uses a Conduit-based search engine and toolbar that seeks to spy on its users and to display ads for them.

What makes MediaGet harmful
The torrent client could be used to spread malicious software
A couple of years ago, the MediaGet torrent client got update-poisoned by malicious actors. It was used to spread a crypto miner.
Interestingly, it’s not the only torrent client that was used to spread malware. The same happened to Download.studio. It’s not the fault of MediaGet, but it feeds into the idea that torrent clients can be used to spread malicious software.
MediaGet is flagged as malicious by antivirus scanners because, as a torrent client, it enables piracy. Piracy is risky – pirated media and software are sometimes infected with malware. Ransomware, adware, various trojans – they get included in pirated programs by malicious actors in an attempt to make money.
Sure, if you download a malicious file through MediaGet, it’s not MediaGet’s fault. Nevertheless, antivirus vendors don’t want to encourage piracy. So, they warn people to be very careful of MediaGet by labeling it as “Unwanted” and “Riskware”.
The hijacker changes browser settings
The MediaGet toolbar is a browser hijacker that belongs to the products of Conduit Ltd. Just like its predecessors, the MediaGet toolbar infiltrates computers bundled with other software, for example, free video players, which means that it usually gets installed on computers without their users’ permission.
The MediaGet toolbar replaces your default search provider and your new tab and home pages to Search.conduit.com. It overwrites the settings you had before, which can be really unpleasant, especially if you’re like me and you’ve meticulously crafted your home page and your new tab page to be useful to you (how to customize your new tab page).
In addition, it displays various advertisements and sponsored links on the start page and in search results. If you try making any search using the MediaGet toolbar, you will have a pretty frustrating experience. Besides, the toolbar can open new tabs in your browser with unknown websites that aren’t always trustworthy.
MediaGet gets bundled with other software
Both versions of MediaGet – the torrent client and the toolbar – may get installed on your computer without asking for your permission. They get bundled with other programs through the use of tools such as InstallCore that allow additional software to be included in installers.
This is enough to classify both versions of MediaGet as potentially unwanted programs. These are commercial, third-party tools whose purpose is to make money, usually by displaying ads to you. Such programs being installed without your consent is not good.
In addition, MediaGet is also distributed on such sites (for example, Softfamous) where it can be bundled with potentially unwanted programs, like Premier Opinion.
How to remove MediaGet
It is highly recommended to remove the MediaGet toolbar as soon as you detect it on your system. You can remove it from your browser manually or you can use an antivirus program.
The MediaGet torrent client has some uses (mostly for pirating), so if you downloaded and installed it intentionally (and you understand and accept the risks of pirating – legal problems, infected files, etc.), then there should be no problem in using it.
You can remove MediaGet manually:
- To remove MediaGet on Windows, go to Control Panel -> Add and Remove programs list or Settings -> Apps and features and remove MediaGet manually.
- On macOS, remove MediaGet by opening Finder -> Applications and dragging MediaGet to Trash.
You can also use an antivirus program, such as Spyhunter for Windows or Combo Cleaner for macOS. This would help you check for other potentially unwanted items on your device.
Afterward, check your browser settings – your search engine, new tab, and home page settings. Make sure they’re as you want them to be.
