How does Mediatab.club work?
Media Tab changes browser settings
Media Tab is made by ShakeApps Ltd., the same company that made Food Tab.
It is a browser add-on, or rather, multiple add-ons. They either replace your default search engine (the site that appears when you type a search query into your address bar) or change your home page to Mediatab.club. You can see that in the permission pop-ups that the Media Tab extensions show during their installation:
Mediatab.club replaces the new tab page
As a new tab page, Mediatab.club is very limited. It has a search box and a few links to popular websites (Twitter, Facebook, Netflix, etc.). You can type search queries into the search box and Mediatab.club sends them to Yahoo or Bing. You can’t change that, you also can’t change the pinned links that are featured on the Mediatab.club new tab.
According to Media Tab’s description on the Chrome Web Store, it “gives you quick access to the most popular websites”. However, not everyone uses the same “popular” websites. This extension gives users no options to customize their new tab.
This is in contrast to default new tabs in the Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and other browsers. These new tab pages allow users to customize the appearance of their home page, most importantly which links are pinned to the page.
In other words, by forcing Mediatab.club to be the new tab page, the Media Tab extension takes away features from web browsers.
Mediatab.club replaces the default search engine
Some versions of the Media Tab extension don’t replace the new tab page, but change the browser’s default search engine. If you use your address bar to search the web, then Mediatab.club catches your search queries and sends them to whichever site it wants.
You might notice a few addresses loading and forwarding to each other. Search queries no longer go directly to your favorite search engine, but are sent from site to site. This can delay the appearance of the search results.
This also has privacy implications. In addition to Yahoo, Bing, or whatever other sites Mediatab.club might open, logging your data, not Mediatab.club can track you, too.
How Mediatab.club makes money
You might wonder why the Media Tab extension would force users to visit Yahoo search.
While Yahoo is a fine search engine, it gets forced on users by many shady browser extensions. This is because Yahoo allows extensions to make money by forwarding their users to Yahoo search.
Media Tab and many other browser add-ons hijack people’s search settings in order to make money. There’s nothing inherently wrong with this, as long as users are informed about it before installing the extension. But Mediatab.club lacks any useful features that would justify its monetization.
How to stop Mediatab.club redirects
