How Mountainbrowse.com hijacks browsers
Mountainbrowse.com promotes unsafe search engines
Mountainbrowse.com is a home page or a new tab page for web browsers. It has pretty background pictures that feature mountains, the words “MOUNTAIN BROWSE” and a search field in the middle. A nice, minimalist home page.
Too minimalist, maybe. When I type a query into Mountainbrowse.com’s search field, it opens Searchlee.com – an infamous alternative search engine. This site is known for appearing uninvited, hijacking searches. It lacks useful features, shows completely irrelevant results, and has way too many ads.
Ideally, Mountainbrowse.com would allow users which search engine they would like their search queries to be sent to. But Mountainbrowse.com does not allow users to make this choice.
I recommend removing Mountainbrowse.com and customizing your new tab yourself. It’s easy and you don’t need to install anything.
Mountainbrowse.com is pretty old. It’s very similar to Bazzsearch.com, Goldenbrowse.com, and Chill.newtab.online – other new tab replacers that promote Searchlee.
A while back, Mountainbrowse.com did use to have its own search engine, but it no longer works.
Mountainbrowse.com is not good for privacy
Mountainbrowse.com may handle people’s web searches. This is a lot of responsibility: our search history can reveal a lot of very personal information, such as details about our health and financial situation. Can Mountainbrowse.com be trusted with this info?
Reading Mountainbrowse.com’s privacy policy, it does log users’ search terms. It also collects technical data about users’ devices and their browsing history (what other sites besides Mountainbrowse.com you visit). Strangely, the site considers search logs to be non-personal information. No mention of GDPR or CCPA.
Mountainbrowse.com may use data that it collects to show interest-based content, which could mean advertisements.
Let’s not forget Searchlee.com – it shows third-party ads and allows third-party cookies. It is also not good for privacy.
I’m always wary of search engines like Mountainbrowse.com. They are relatively unknown, which allows them to avoid the scrutiny that is placed on mainstream search engines such as Google and Bing. While mainstream search engines allow you to view and manage (even delete) your online activities, Mountainbrowse.com and Searchlee.com do not offer such features.
How to get rid of Mountainbrowse.com
If your browser opens Mountainbrowse.com without your permission, there might be a few causes for this:
- bad browser extensions,
- adware apps,
- hijacked browser new tab or search engine settings.
Below you can find instructions for how to find and remove apps and extensions. But finding and recognizing adware and other malware is not always easy. And we can’t give you the names of these programs, as there are so many new ones. Sometimes, malware uses procedurally generated names!
You can use anti-malware apps such as Spyhunter for Mac, Combo Cleaner for Mac, Spyhunter for PC, and others. Anti-malware programs can detect malicious and low-reputation programs and warn you about them.
Another thing to do is to try and disable all of your browser extensions one by one until Mountainbrowse.com stops showing up. And I do mean all of them. Sometimes, an add-on you completely trusted can turn out to be malicious.
